Folder for when I don't feel like carrying a knife?

All of those suggestions were excellent, but how come nobody defended the Kershaw Leek. It's light, slim, dependable, and razor-sharp? I would definitely suggest you take a second look at it, especially the G10 handled version with the S30V blade. I use it for the exact same thing you are looking for. When I'm wearing jeans, my larger folders are fine, no prob. But when your bumming around in shorts, doing yardwork or running errands, you cant have that much knife hanging off your hip, and that's when I clip on the leek. I never even notice it's there and it takes care of any cutting need I come across in that situation. Happy shopping, but I just had to throw in a little defense for the Kershaw.

Cheers,
Jon:)

your post made me realize i mis-spoke initially, I handled the chive and scallion, but not the leek.. kershaw's nomenclature gets a little difficult for me to remember when i'm just thinking "onion" for all of them :D

In particular, the smaller of the two i handled (chive?) was just too small... and the other, scallion, i believe, had a linerlock that I didn't trust much.
Is the lock on the leek a good deal better? I'd consider it despite it being somewhat larger than I'd usually need around the house.

still looking at all the others, thanks for the suggestions:thumbup:
knife shopping is always fun!

Ya get what ya pay for. Just get a Sebenza once and for all; then you'll be satisfied. Once you get one, you'll forget about the cheapies....not that the cheapies aren't good, it's just that the Sebies are SO nice! The guys that have 'em will tell ya. (Yes...they do cost a little more than 50.00...and worth every penny.)

Byrd Robin FRN would be perfect for when you don't have a pocket. For when you do, try either a Victorinox Bantam Alox or a Fallniven U2. The Bantam is super flat and light, and the U2 just cuts forever and is nearly as light.

FRN Calypso Jr. Cuts like a demon and very lightweight. Most of what you can find now are going to be ZDP-189 and probably outside your price limit a little. They also have wonderful ergonomics.

Have you thought about a neck knife on a ball chain? No clip for the shorts - and I know any knife on gym shorts can drag them down - even the LST. For discretion, just pop it down your t-shirt, and when the chain is properly sized, the handle won't show below the sternum. Untucked it's still relatively accessible. If you're not buffed and show evidence of a desk job, you can loop it sam browne style over one shoulder with a longer chain and hang it one sided just at the waistline, which offers a quicker retrieve.

Neck knives offer a lot more diverse patterns, sheathing, and blade length that still carry quite lightly, and can give you the not-really-carrying-but-am when you prefer it - and they don't work up out of your shorts to hit the ground at the wrong time like so many clips do.

I'd hate to lose a nice Sebenza somewhere on a 5 miler . . .

I take it a clip is necessary (if not I'd say get a Case peanut).

One with a clip not mentioned yet...SOG Blink...tiny, thin, lightweight, and the assisted opening makes it fun to play with!

Spyderco Spin and Cricket are a couple of tiny knives that can disappear in a pocket... maybe too small, but around the same size as a Boker Subcom IIRC, VG-10 blades, too.

I was never impressed with the chive or scallion, but I sure do love my leek.

Stainless steel framelock leek (not the liner lock models) . . it disappears in my pocket. Unlike virtually every other knife I have with a pocket clip, I can shove my hand in my pocket without the knife getting in the way. Super slim and smooth . . yet big enough so that it's a real knife. The scallions and chives just seemed like little mail opening gadgets in comparison. I had my leek professionally sharpened on a belt and the convex edge has never let me down.

I've carried a Scallion for years now and it works well for an office EDC in my opinion. Its sheeple-friendly and disappears between a belt and waistband.

If you don't mind a blade that is under 2", AG Russell has several small light knives.

Hunter's Scalpel
Ultimate pen knife
Ultimate Lock back

I have the Hunter' scalpel and one of the ultimate pen knives. I made a Kydex sheath for the ultimate pen knife so it can be used as a neck knife or clipped to a belt loop. THe Hunter's scalpel came with a cord for use as a knck knife and also a clip for attaching to clothing. This may be perfect for clipping on your shorts.

A friend of mine had a small William Henry with a clip that he attached to his shirt collar. The first time I met him, I noticed it on his collar. I just said "Nice William Henry." He was very surprised that i was able to recognize it (most people we were with were not knife knuts).

I also made a small neck knife with a belt clip out of 01 steel. It's probably less than 1/2 oz. if that much. It's one that I like to clip to my shorts arpund the house. ~3" oal.

I have a little folder that I paid about five bucks for. Someone made it for Fenix, and I got it with a Fenix flashlight I ordered. It's black and has a blade a little over two inches. The edge itself is straight and the spine curves over it, coming to a wicked sharp point. The black aluminum frame has cut-outs and the locking mechanism is a frame lock.

The entire knife is a bit over three inches and can be carried in the pocket or via the clip. It'll do most cutting jobs and is very discrete. It's perfect for cutting open some medicine packets I keep in my pocket. It's what I'd call a "practical tactical" knife.
