Folder question

Nice!
And... I just ordered the American Kami Folder, Red handle, chisel grind. :D

WOW, this thread has exploded since last night. I guess I should throw my opinion in too...

XM-18 vs. Sebenza/Umnumzaan vs. SNG/Original RCC

XM-18: Ergonomically the best knife. Mine has the flipper and allows an extremely comfortable and useful choke up grip for finer action. Fit and Finish is top of the line. My favorite of the above listed by a good bit. Blade is stout and I have complete confidence I could torture this knife and it will be fine. Carries great clipped to pocket and is a real joy to use.

Sebenza/Umnumzaan: Equal to the XM-18 for fit and finish. Perfectly smooth on opening and closing. Not as comfortable to use as the XM-18, but still very comfortable and the thinner blade is more useful for most EDC tasks. Aesthetically pleasing to say the least.

SNG/Original RCC: I have a lemon SNG. I was psyched to get the DGG SNG have really been pretty disappointed with it. Blade has movement once locked up. Handles look like they move when the blade is locked and I have the least confidence in this knife out of any of the above mentioned. It sits in a cabinet.
The RCC is a different matter. This knife is #067 of the original RCCs, to my understanding. Very solid knife. Huge, truly "tank-like." Blade is sharp and the recurve is nice for cutting purposes. Lock up is very solid and once opened the knife really feels like a fixed blade. Too big and heavy for me to EDC, but still a great knife. I sold an AR that was also very nice, tight and well made, I just have a lemon for an SNG and it bugs the hell out of me cause it is the only Strider I want to EDC.

JD--- Sorry to hear that. Strider will fix you up. Have you thought about sending the knife to STR?

I have not really thought about it but I probably should. I am sure they would fix me up so I should probably take advantage of their warranty. I honestly just thought that with the thin slabs that the wiggle was actually flex in the frame and thus was not something that could be easily fixed without a design change, but then again, I don't make knives and seldom is my wisdom the final say on any matter. I still love the looks of the knife and the blade is sharp, I am just not as big a fan as I am of the XM-18. Completely different beasts in my mind. I will contact Strider and see what they can do.

yep gotta sound tha chimes here!! real nice folders mentioned already, i have been caring a spyderco rescue, serrated edge, since the mid 80's excellent knives, spyderco is one of the best all around carrying folders, next i like the microtech, mini socom. my grail folder is a mike norris stainless damascus folder and hopefully that will happen this year...
i do agree that folders in the 200 + range has a lot to do with, personal taste.

Its a awesome knife if you want something small with a great grip and a lot of toughness. Basically it's a cute little tank heh

Beautiful little Yuna!

There's also an unnamed proto by Anso that I love. A guy over on the USN has one, and I don't know where the second is. I've got a message to Jens asking if he can make me one.

Btw...a certain ex-Busse fiend with a penchant for pushing buttons has amassed a VERY nice collection of Anso's over there.

Truly, the XM is not even as ridiculously priced as many assume. The secondary market prices are high, but I've gotten 3 for under $400. I gave one to my wife's OB after he delivered our daughter, and have one to carry and one squirreled away in my safe with a second McGizmo LunaSol 20...just in case.

Rick's knives are just as tough, or tougher than Striders (I've never been impressed with Striders...F&F just doesn't justify the prices in my opinion) and beautifully finished. I have yet to sharpen or even clean my user in over a year and it just does what it's supposed to. I've dug holes with it, cut, sliced, stabbed, etc, and never had a single issue.

On top of that, Rick is a good guy and went out of his way to get my Doc's knife to me quickly, via Matt D at MattDTactical.

Alright, well you guys did it...you influenced my already weak mind (again). The two folders this thread inspired me to buy are here. My Zero Tolerance 200ST and Strider PT CC Spear Point arrived this week. The ZT is a BEAST! Although a little large/heavy for an EDC (I live in the city and tend to carry smaller blades on a daily basis) I love it. The Strider is more of the size/weight I was look for in an EDC. This is a sweet/sturdy little knife and will be with me daily. However, I've got to say...I am really feeling it's over priced for what it is...oh well. Got my sights on the RJ Martin next.

Nice choices. :D

Don't worry, the more you use the Strider the more you will love it and understand why they cost as much as they do. :)

RJ Martin yeah, I want to get one of those but it'll have to be a lefthanded model. I heard those knives really open pretty fast, with the bearing design and the flipper. What can you tell me about it, beings I've never handled one in person. Thanks, :)

@ikkyo

try plazacutlery.com there's a small chance they will have one in stock, if not they have a list and Mr. Hinderer seems to send batches their way quite often. it took about 3 months to get mine.
I just got my XM-18 from Plaza about a week ago and I waited 2 yrs. If I did'nt respond to the e-mail quick enough it might have been another 2 yrs. They had 4 of them and the one I really wanted, carbon fiber flipper was gone. I was lucky to get the brown handle stonewash. Plaza is a class act. They sold mine for the same $385 that Rick H. charges. They coud eaisly get another $100 for them. A few months ago I bought a orange XM-18 on thesecondary market and paid $500 and this was less than others were going for, (I'll probably get rid of it now that I have 2).
This folder is as well made as they come. The guys that say its a cross between a Sebbie and SNG have a point. Its got the precision and tolerances of a Sebenza and more than the toughness of a Strider.
I switch using a :
Strider SNG
Strider PT
Sebenza
Benchmade 721
Benchmad Grip
Benchmade 12400
Benchmae 710
Buck TNT
Spyderco Sage II
SOG Visionary
But the one that gets the most pocket carry is the Spyderco Delica 4. Probably cause of the light weight and not having the worry of losing it or having it taken away- which happened to my Endura when I used to work in NYC. A policeman saw the clip in my back pocket when I was waiting for the subway. He insisted it was a gravity knife and eventually conficated it.

I you want an XM18 now and can afford the mark up, try these two of Rick's overseas dealers:
1) Polizeibedarf.ch: 3" black flipper, 480 CHF = $447.47 US and 3.5" with choice of slab colors and flipper or non, 525 CHF = $489.42 US. These prices are plus s/h and IVO says that he's getting "a large order again from Rick" soon. (He's arranged to have Mr. Hinderer send one directly to me instead of shipping it to Switzerland and having Ivo ship it back.)
2) Viennacutlery.com: (higher prices but one is IWB as I type) From a 3" flipper, black, 395 Euro = $539.65 US
to a 3.5" non-flipper, black, 420 Euro = $573.79 US. (Again, plus s/h.)
Currency conversions are close approximations of the current exchange rates courtesy of XE.com.
I went the overseas route to avoid the multi-year waiting period and still pay less that the asking price for those available on the secondary market which seem to range from $600 to $650 US for non-customs. I got the 3" model because that is what I can lawfully carry in my jurisdiction. While the Strider SNG and SMF are very nice, I have to restrict them to use when I'm working with large wire. Then I can justify it as a tool of the trade as a "pocket knife with blade of less than 4 in." That's how I could carry my Active Duty for a few months: I was terminating High Voltage switch gear at the DC ballpark.
