Anyone know of a company that make a tough durable folder with a .25" thick blade and tough lock?

Check out Trident Knives/ Crusader Forge. Their folders are some of the toughest I have seen. They use .25 inch stone CPM-S30V with titanium handles all with a frame lock design. Feels like a king sized snickers in your pocket but they are tough as nails. Usually Bill at www.finercutlery.com has some in stock. Be prepared to pay for them though....

Severtech makes a thick ole auto, Strider makes the AR which is a BEAST. Ontario has the XM 1 extreme which is a thick folder and is affordable(dont know exact thickness but have held it and its built).

Also you could check out Masters of Defense I have a CQD its .148 which isnt super thick but its a very built knife.

What does war have to do with a knife? Unless of course you were just attempting to put down all knives made from thick stock, which is simply ignorance.

I'll second you on that one:thumbup::thumbup:
I hate thin bladed knives:barf: That said I like my rukus even with a petite 0.150" blade...by the way the large CQD (which I don't particularly care for) has a .175" blade.

I think he was referring to "what is it good for--absolutely nothing," not to war (I'm not sure if that's what you meant).

I don't think a .25" thick folder would be useless. It sure wouldn't make a fine slicer, but you don't buy quarter in thick knives to slice things with. If you really need to rely on a folder, I can see sacrificing some slicing ability for robustness. this one is .20" and doesn't look terribly unwieldy.

Thin bladed knves have their advantages. Look at any good bushcraft knife: Koster's Bushcrafter, various nessmuk makers use 3/32 steel with great results. To hate thin knives is ignorant.

With that said there is very little my kabar heavy Bowie can't do. (it is .275 inch stock:D)

I know what he meant, I was just being pedantic. ;)

Fact is, geometry cuts. With good geometry thick blades cut well.

Severtech, Strider's AR and the XM1 all supposedly use 3/16 stock. (though the AR seems a bit thinner in real life, IMHO) I recommend a Fulcrum IID from Extrema Ratio...

The AR is goofy big, like clown shoes. Still an awesome blade. This one is a modded passaround knife:

The Ontario Hossom Retribution will take care of you at a surprisingly pleasant price point.

I guess I'm a bit dense at times. :foot:

That's a good point on the geometry, although some of the Tridents were saber ground; not exactly cutting machines. I've heard good things about the AR (full height grind), so I guess geometry is a huge factor in super-thick folders.

I don't think you can get really great geometry with thick stock on a pocket-friendly folder. It requires more blade height, which eats up real estate in the pocket pretty quickly. You could get a hollow grind, but then why not a full flat on slightly thinner stock?

I don't like thick blades on folders because they're still folders, which means locks and pivots-points of failure that thick stock doesn't do anything about. Overbuilding the whole thing is possible, but I'm not unlucky enough to live where I would need to carry that much weight in a folder. I can just switch to a fixed blade if I think I need more meat to the knife. Eh, life is full of compromises.

I really dig those thick bladed folders myself. Every edc knife I carry has a thicker than 1/8th inch blade. Sorta funny though that the BM Rukus is the thinnest of the bunch at .150". My others range from .157" on my Rijbak, .157" on my ZT0200 and ZT0500, and the thickest is .187" and is my Strider AR. I have no problem with carrying the heavier knives and as far as my cutting chores go these knives perform to my satisfaction.

I do have some knives with the standard thickness of .125" or 1/8th that include my large Sebenza, and my Protech Runt 2. I have no problem carrying these either, but my preference is for thicker stock.

Stanley makes a small prybar that will pry better and probably out cut these ridiculous thick bladed folders...
