Folder with .25" thick blade

Stanley makes a small prybar that will pry better and probably out cut these ridiculous thick bladed folders...

I definitely prefer a thick blade, with a stouter tip, nothing ridiculous about it. I believe it may have been Doug Ritter who said that your survival knife, is the knife you have with you when you need it. (something like that anyway) You may not need a .25 inch thick blade today, but if the fecal matter hits the fan, and you aren't somebody who keeps your BOB with you at all times, a stouter knife may be the difference between survival, and a less than favorable outcome. Failing the sudden incarnation of doom, I really do just prefer the confidence that such a knife provides during my daily cutting and, ahem, cutting-related tasks... Case in point, I've been carrying a Millie lately, and it slices like a scalpel, but it just doesn't give me the confidence of a Rijbak, or something thicker, with a stouter grind... I shudder to admit that I've even considered picking up a Dark Ops Covert folder, purely in the name of science, of course. :)

The question to me is "is the rest of the knife strong enough to support that 1/4 inch thick blade". Last time I was interested in something heavy duty that folded I recall that testing by spyderco and others indicated that pivot pins (even the massive ones) deform and shear before those super-thick blades fail. I'm patiently awaiting the busse folder to see if they make a super-heavy duty tank knife or a high performance cutter like the swamprat folder. Not much point in giving up cutting for prying ability if only half the knife is up to task.

Check out Trident Knives/ Crusader Forge. Their folders are some of the toughest I have seen. They use .25 inch stone CPM-S30V with titanium handles all with a frame lock design. Feels like a king sized snickers in your pocket but they are tough as nails.

A full sized Snickers? That's freaking funny.

I notice there are a lot of intolerant knife snobs always eager to flaunt their ignorance attempting to insult knives made from thick stock. . . I don't usually see such stupidity running the opposite direction. Maybe they have inferiority complexes? Most people who like thick knives like thin knives as well, so I guess they generally don't feel threatened by other people's choices.

A perfect example of what your talking about Rat Fink.

Now, what I wanna see is a 5/16" thick folder, now THATS FAT!

I don't think you can get really great geometry with thick stock on a pocket-friendly folder. It requires more blade height, which eats up real estate in the pocket pretty quickly. You could get a hollow grind, but then why not a full flat on slightly thinner stock?

I don't like thick blades on folders because they're still folders, which means locks and pivots-points of failure that thick stock doesn't do anything about. Overbuilding the whole thing is possible, but I'm not unlucky enough to live where I would need to carry that much weight in a folder. I can just switch to a fixed blade if I think I need more meat to the knife. Eh, life is full of compromises.

I do not mind a thick blade, and I don't keep other things in my knife pocket so added width like a Manix doesn't bother me. But I generally do not use folders for fixed blade chores. My current EDC folder is a Military. I guess an overbuilt folder could be needed if I lived in a restrictive area banning the carry of fixed blades. But I think this has less to do with need, mostly just wanting a cool knife.

The Extrema Ratio Fulcrum folders support the weight of an adult male... how much more pressure are you going to put on a knife, than your own weight? I assume that it's strong enough... and besides, carrying a folder is usually much easier (at least for me) than carrying as small fixed blade, like the Fallkniven WM-1, for instance... Not that I don't drool when a fatty game warden comes up on the for sale forum... :)

I have been making Thick Blade folders for years, The most comman that I sell is .187 and I sell A lot of them arround hunting, It's great for hogs, elk, and deer

If I new how to post the pictures I would

So send me Your e-mail and I'll send Them

I think that Rat Fink summed it up for me when he said, "But I think it has less to do with need, mostly just wanting a cool knife." Plain and simple is that I could get by with my Case Gunstock pattern for the cutting chores I have, and NEED nothing more. But since I am a knife nut I WANT what I perceive to be the strongest built folder I can get. Doesn't matter to me if I never have to use it. I like having the ability and freedom to carry such a knife, sorta like Linus and his blanket, but it is me and my knife.

I think it ridiculous to claim that thick bladed folders are ridiculous. It's just plain ole' RIDICULOUS!!:)

I don't have a problem with anybody elses opinions, nor do I believe they or their opinion are ignorant. We all have different opinions because we use knives for different stuff, thats whats so great about them!! I don't happen to care for most knives made of thinner stock (when I say thin I mean sak and leatherman thin) my minirukus and endura don't get the pocket time of my 610 and zt0200 and they never will (though they each have their jobs which they do beautifully and I love them both:)) how does me not caring for knives much under eigth inch make me ignorant? Simply because you don't share that opinion?
I have realized some confusion must be going on maybe I should not have quoted the previous statement...I was only trying to support another knife lover who enjoys thicker blades

No.
If you spouted off "that knife is weak, get a real knife" when people were talking about looking for/wanting thin knives, then you would be among the ignorant.

I don't think not caring for thinner stock, or thicker stock blades makes a person ignorant. I think when someone makes a statement like ".......these ridiculous thick bladed folders..." then said person better get ready for the flames that are sure to follow. The word "ridiculous" is key as it implies that people who like thick bladed knives are deserving of scornful laughter, should be made fun of, and should be derided. To me that it far worse than ignorance.:)

I notice that there are a lot of knife people that seem to forget that knives are made to cut. No folder with a 1/4" thick blade is going to cut worth a crap.

Overly thick bladed folders are all show and no go.

I can slice apples and pop hairs with my Extrema Fulcrum, and almost anything in between... I find such generalities to be the fodder of the weakminded. Buy a decent .25 thick folder and actually use it, then come back and talk about your experience.

Well, some are more ignorant than others. What you like is just a personal preference.

Luckily, Roninpimp has stopped by to illustrate the other end of the spectrum.

Yeah, I carry my wallet in my rt. front pocket, so I avoid stuff with sharp corners, wide blades/large thumbholes, or handles with generous curves. Had to get rid of a Spyderhawk real quick.

If my Greco had a pocket clip, I'd try it out for carry. 3/16" blade, but thin & straight steel frame. Not a great cutter with the sabre grind, but I wanted something stout... just to have it :D

After reading this thread I feel ready to introduce a line of super-thick folders to cash in on everyone's apparent lust for one. That's the great thing about this whole crazy thing, if there's a market, there will be products.

I personally have insufficient incentive to carry a thick-bladed folder as an EDC in case I ever need it. Others will have their own.

I've had thick and thin knives which cut like crap. Type of grind, thickness near the edge(and how quickly it tapers to being thick) and, like has been mentioned, overall blade geometry is the ticket.
That said, 1/4 inch has to be near the limit of what could be made into a viable cutting tool. I wouldn't want thicker in a folder.

I've got a bunch of thin bladed knives that have no cut at all, all are under 1/8" so, whats the deal???

Rat Fink said it all, its in the edge geometry, thickness at the spine doesnt equate to cutting efficency.
