Folder with high-riding pocket clip

I'm looking for a good folding knife with high riding pocket clip (low rider handle). It should be close to 4" blade length, under 5 Oz, with AUS8 blade steel or better. Anything under $150 will do.

- The pocket clips on many SOG folders are perfect, but many people don't review the knives favorably.
- Boker Jim Wagner series is on the heavy side.
- Spyderco Police and Military have relatively low riding pocket clips.

Is there any other decent folder with high riding clip that I should look at? I know pocket clip sounds trivial, but since 99% of the time my folder is gonna sit in my pocket, it's kinda important especially for certain places and occasions. I want the folder to be readily accessible without spooking others (too much).

Thanks in advance.

1) Gerber Covert series; or the VTech VT1300.
2) Pick the knife you really want - blade profile, grip type, construction, materials, etc., that actually suits your work style, then have someone like STR make the clip for you.

A knife is much more than the clip - and readily accessible but non-spooking indicates two contradictory values you're trying to accomodate. If it really is a problem being seen, forget the accessibility, as only one in a 100,000 people ever bother to get the necessary training to actually justify it.

Any pocket knife is accessible - speed of deployment is an internet myth that really means "self defense," which is a joke in trained combatives circles.

Those guys use guns for a reason.

I am a bit confused. I think of a high ride as sticking out a bit and being easily seen. My Benchmade Lum 740 is the best "deep" pocket carry at 4". The Lone Wolf Harsey T2 (micarta handles) is another favorite 4", but rides rather high in the pocket. Both can be found for well under 150. Both in S30V steel, which is a very good EDC blade steel.

Sorry if I'm not clear enough. What I'm looking for is a folder that shows nothing but its clip attached to my pocket.

I want it readily accessible, but more for practical than defensive reason. The folder is gonna share my pocket with a keychain with 10 keys, an AAA flashlight, a SAK, and probably a lighter. Not having to fish for it among these things is a major convenience.

Why 4" if not for defensive reasons? Well, simply because I can. Until recently I lived in places with length restriction. Now that I live in a knife-friendly state, I might as well take advantage of it.

I think we're all a bit confused with your terms and definitions. When we say a "low rider clip", this means that whole knife rides low in the pocket, which means the clip itself is as high up on the handle as possible, and perhaps is bent over itself for even deeper pocket carry. The knives you listed as "high riding" are indeed what we'd know as "low riding". Yes, the clip on a "low riding" knife rides as high as possible on the handle, but that's just not the way it's generally referred to.

Some nice very low riding knives:

Benchmade 740 Dejavoo
Spyderco Calypso 3
Chris Reeve Mnandi (very nice, very expensive)

The lowest riding knife I have as standard from the factory that fits your description is an Al Mar mini SERE 2K.

My BM Dejavoo is in my pocket right now; it does ride low but is a big knife; usually have to take it out to get to other stuff inpocket; great knife!

Take a look at the SOG aluminum Flash II, the knife carries deep in the pocket and the aluminum version is a good quality knife.

I paid around $70 for my Flash II

Yup, IIRC Al Mar probably has the most blade in the most concealed package. (Or you could buy a knife that STR makes a Titanium low-rider for.

The Al Mar sure does look nice!

I was also confused at first, but realized you're meaning that the clip "rides high" on the knife. Most just call that a "lowrider" clip.

As to your question, SOG has many models that'd fit the bill, although I'm not a big fan of AUS 8 & their VG-10 is a little soft, it seems to me. I did modify my Night Vision, though (ATS-34 blade, fully SS liners, & G-10 scales). I put a Visionary back spacer & bayonet clip on it. Works great.

Others that come to mind are the BM De Javoos (745/740-small/lg), Al Mar Sere's, Gerber Applegates (Covert model, not sure if the others do too), & Spyderco's Caly 3 & the Sage (Not quite as lowriding as the Caly 3, but close).

However, as someone pointed out, you can have STR make a Ti lowrider clip for you & I think "trimcut123" might be getting into that, too. I've had several knives with lowrider clips added & they work fine.

One of my favorites is a custom Bauchop Shaman with a Blade-Tech Rijbak clip on it. There seems to be several knife modders around BFs that you could have a lowrider clip put on just about any knife you want.

Custom lowrider clip sounds like a good alternative. Spyderco Police or Military would be really sweet with a lowrider clip. How much does it typically cost?

The Buck Vantage looks like it shows just the clip. Buck Vantage mini-review

This is an option I was going to suggest as well. It hits just about all of your requirements on the button. It is not a hard use folder however, it is still one of my favorite knives.

I don't want to speak for them on price, but I'd suggest you contact "STR" about a custom Ti lowrider clip, or "trimcut123" about putting one on for you (He might have clips, too, I'm not sure). Both of them are members here & STR has his own Forum in the "Knife Makers" section.
