Folders: Drop shutty or controlled descent?

Drop openny is more of something to worry about .
That’s true. Had an XM-18 like that that bit me pretty good when I stuck my hand in my pocket without realizing it had sprung open. Made me reconsider ever carrying it tip up again.

When it comes to knives that drop shut, blade weight and sharpness are two huge factors when it comes to my tolerance level. I’ll let it slide on a smaller knife, but if it’s a knife that can do some real damage, I’m going to be tightening that pivot screw.
The insane Cold Steel Mayhem comes to mind. It does come drop shut from the factory. 🩸😱

I noticed that now a lot of the reviewers are focused on the sound produced as the blade is closed. We're going to need to address the audio and acoustic qualities of all knives going forward.

"Just listen to that blade when it closes. It sound like...why, it sounds like 'Murica" at its founding!!!"

Haptics and sound are important to the overall appeal of a product. BMW figured that out decades ago, as did the old traditional knife makers. Walk and talk is a thing, as you know.

Closing sounds? I didn't know that was a factor. I do have a $42 Petrified Fish Beluga liner lock that locks open with a clunk as solid as my titanium frame lock ZT0562MIC.

As long as the closing action isn't sloppy, I'm in.

From free fall to push it in place with the pointer finger and every version in between. I find that most models have design tweeks to accommodate the intended closing characteristics.

Like a large choil or intentionally shaped tabs for the fast ones. Or extended jimping and/or a riced spine for finger assisted comfort.

No way am I narrowing my tolerance to try different makes and models based on how it closes.

I’m definitely in the controlled descent camp. I much prefer some action on my part to induce closing besides releasing the locking mechanism, even if it’s just a wrist flick to get the blade moving. I have a handful of button locks and a few liner/frame locks that behave perfectly to my liking. There are still elements of the action from there that determine overall build quality, particularly that easy, smooth hydraulic feel that doesn’t require a significant effort to close, but doesn’t just drop by itself.

The last sedan I bought, a 2015 6 cyl Impala sounds like an 8 when you stomp it, I love the sound. Sound, looks, feel, all things that impact your senses can trigger the “Gotta have” button. Not sure about taste though… 😎
