Folders in College?

Carried a folder my entire college career and never had an issue. Just don't be a idiot and wave it around or show off and you should be fine.

thanks for the replies everyone. really appreciate it.

looks like im gonna have to ditch the endura at home. i've got a kershaw scallion that i use sometimes. guess that will be my new edc.

I'm gonna be in Los Angeles. sorry for the confusion. I'm goin to USC.

I'll only use the knife when i need to. wouldn't want to scare any sheeple.

If you have a roommate, he may get nervous if you start playing with your knives. One of my friends got reported for something along those lines and the University Police confiscated all his cool toys. From then on, he was also prohibited from being in any residential quad but he could continue to attend classes. (Good old Uni, always willing to take money.)

My former roommate, on the other hand, saw me cut open a box and ended up ordering a few knives of his own, including a Benchmade Griptilian and Spyderco Delica wave.

I used to go to the USC anime club when I first moved to LA (I was never a student there), and I carried a folding pocket knife at all times. Since it was in my pocket, the fact that I had it never came up. :-)

I guess I just got lucky going to college in KY.

All the buildings had "NO WEAPONS" signs, but our knife law says that is it a weapon if it is not "an ordinary pocket or hunting knife".

That seems to give a very great deal of leeway.

Sadly, someone said I made them uncomfortable when I was working at a doctor's office using my Kershaw Leek to open mail.

Someone else said that it made them uncomfortable when I was carrying a Gerber Diesel on my belt.

They did not feel better when I said not to worry, I could legally be carrying a gun and they would NOT see it.

good luck in school.

and be careful, that's a strange area. frat houses and campus buildings flanked by gang areas.

dont wander too far east of figueroa or west of vermont.

or south of exposition.

Where I went (in northern NY), fixed blades and firearms had to be stored with campus safety. You could check them out if you were going hunting or camping. Folders under 4" were alright as long as you didn't do something stupid with them. Most of the people I knew had a pocket knife or multi-tool on them at all times and never had any trouble.

I go to WPI in Mass and I've been considering getting a folder. Specifically a benchmade mini grip.

I asked campus police and get the run-around. "knives are weapons" etc. After i was told "probably not" and being asked why would I want to carry a knife, trying to explain myself, I was told to come back to speak with the captain. Not exactly something I want to do...

Some of the posts above are a bit confusing.

Per state law at the university, the only thing prohibited is a fixed blade over 2.5". State law says nothing about folders on university campus.

LA city and county laws say only that any knife over 3" must be concealed.

So your Endura (or six of them), concealed, would be completely legal.

School rules should be listed at the school's website - look them up yourself, and print up a copy to keep around just in case.

And whatever you choose to carry, even if it is legal and within school rules, keep it quiet. If you get to be known as "the guy with the knife" it could lead to problems.

Well the reason I went to the police was I could find absolutely nothing on the website regarding knives in particular, only that they disallow weapons in general.

Nothing that says small folding knives are weapons, nothing that says they aren't either. I didn't want to chance that and leave it ambiguous.

However as someone on another forum pointed out, "cops aren't lawyers, don't ask them for legal advice". I'm gonna track down someone else in campus who might have a better idea.

i edited my first post here to indicate concealed carry per the city/county codes. brainfart.

sorry if i added to any confusion.

the endura is a 3" inch blade? thought it was longer. i thought the delica was the 3 incher.

Try getting through any lab without a knife. Im not even a science major but because of interest in high school I was let into honors chem for chem/physics majors and we had lab all the time and even the tiny girls were carrying some pretty impressive tools. my lab partner (who was one of said tiny girls) always had her knife on her so I didnt bother bringing one of my own (besides its embaressing when a girl has her dad's strider and you cant afford anything close to that expensive).

Im pretty sure you cant have knives on my campus. The last thing I want is a legal battle with a university. A high school, sure, there isnt much they can do and if I complete the requirements I can sue for diploma, but if a university denies it you are up the creek. more than that, I dont want my id checked, since I may not have informed the state of my change of adress -_-

ps Im glad my school doesnt have an anime club (at least as far as I know) because the taste of the average weeaboo is so offensive to me I have a hard time keeping my hands to myself.

I carry a Mini-Grip and a Leatherman Kick on campus every day, openly- and nary a look so far. Check your local and school laws and you should be okay.

there is an exemption for lawful use on any campus.

haha tell that to the student handbook

"Possession of any firearms, explosives, or other weapons, including, but not limited to, pistols, rifles, shotguns, hand- guns, BB guns, paint guns, knives, or dangerous chemicals on University premises"

I dont think that a school that wont let you have a paint gun would be willing to deem anything "lawful use". maybe you can convince the cops, but the school can do pretty much whatever it wants.

yes, they pretty much can do what they want.

i would suggest talking with an administrator if it is something you need. that is a blanket rule to cya, and i would think they have their own exemptions, even if they are not published.

When I was in school I carried a medium sized knife in my back pack, but the knife I used in front of the other students was usually an SAK, Leatherman Juice, or something similar. I found these to be a lot less threatening to the campus. Plus you have no idea how handy a bottle opener is in college, all those bottles of…umm…soda…

true, but they ARE the ones who get to arrest you and put a black mark on your permanent record that's a real pain to remove(if it's even possible), so what the local PD considers a weapon is good to know.
