TRy out something from the Zero Tolerance line up. The ZT0200 is a WHOLE lot of knife for the price charged. The ZT0300 series gives a big folder with AO capability. Both are very well made and come from Kershaw. Do a search on the forums here for both and you can read up on them a bit to see what I mean.

I carry the Zero Tolerance ZT302 and love it . It is the best knife I have ever owned. Try it you'll love it. Thanks, Jason

When I want to go light I have 2 folders and a double bit hatchet seen here:

It is a Spyderco Centofante 4, Queen Canoe and custom hatchet by a local maker (cannot remember his name now- I'll find the info when GF gets home). The Queen takes the more robust work, Centofante is for pure slicing and hmmm..... I wonder what the hatchet is for;)

all of the buck 110 's Ive owned or handled wich is about 50 of them had blade play go to any walmart or osh and check for youre self but the ones ive owned have never failed so I think you should be ok .

bm rukus or mini rukus their both as strong as a fixed blade
or the cold steel recon 1 series.

Anyone know which of these has the most robust lock? I'm considering getting a folder to supplement my SAK, which I would want to be able to lightly baton (if that's even possible with a folder).

I tried this with an old gerber I had (liner lock), and it would always make it unlock, even when using the right technique and batoning only the blade. Only one that has sorta worked is an opinel, and i'm worried about eventually bending the ring-lock too much for it to function.

Anyone recommend any brands which have awesome locks?

I would go for benchmade or SOG. The Vulcan is a great knife with good steel and thickness .16" and has the arc-lock which can withstand over 1000 pounds of pressure before closing up. The benchmade knives with the axis-lock have the same stats with the 1000 pound pressure test.

I still consider a fixed blade knife mandatory for outdoor activities, but I've been in some situations where they are not always convenient or feasible (assisting our Scouting troop is one such occasion).

For my "smaller" folders, my most common are my Sebenza or Ritter RSK-1; I've recently added HK's axis which I'm looking forward to using:

More typical and robust folders are from Spyderco or Benchmade (lockback or axis). I will say that CRKT's folder with LAWKS is pretty tough and safe for light battoning as well:

Now, if you're looking at replacing a small fixed blade, there's a few folders that would fill the gap. The two I would trust the most would be the Ontario's Hossom large folder or Benchmade's Ruckus. I do like the large Lone Wolf T3 or TOPS large Magnum folders, but they are both liner locks, and I haven't tried any kind of battoning with them as of yet.

Of course my original Al Mar SERE is the standard to which I compare the others:

thanks for the ideas.. how do the spyderco locks compare to the arc-locks or axis-locks?

I wouldn't expect the lockback of the spyderco to hold out nearly as much as the 1000 pound tested axis and arc-locks.
