Folders

That is a really nice knife !!

Most of my money goes to fixed blades. I consider folders utilitarian tools, so I don't spend a lot of money on them , or worry about fancy steels. I have Spydercos, Bucks, Schrades,etc.. all well below the $80 mark that suit my needs just fine. Cutting rope and string, opening boxes and packaging, shorts wear, etc. If there is a task that seems to big for a folder, the heavies come out. Always have one or two on me. I am more of a fixed blade fellow.:)

I always have a couple of folders with me, at least. I edc 2 folders and those usually stay with me in the woods. Right now it's a Case Sodbuster Jr. in stainless (sharpest knife I own) in my right pocket and Spyderco Delica 4 clipped into my right pocket.

My go to folder outdoors has been my Spyderco Military for probably 10 or 12 years now. When I was mountain guiding weight was everything, and I often didn't take a fixed blade with me at all, but my trusty Millie was always with me.

I have gone on lots of hunting, Fishing and Camping trips with nothing but a Buck 110, Never failed me once, I would hate to even guess how many head of big game that it has field dressed and skinned, Many time even while wearing a fixed blade on my belt, I have used one of ( I have no clue how many) folders. Paired up with my 45 year old Hatchet, I have never really needed anything else, However I like fixed blades just as much. BUT I always have a folder with me, along with the SAK

I have that Buck as well. Great knife. I have several Spyderco knives but I am not sure which ones anymore. I always have a couple dry wall knives in my Bib pockets, they get most of the day to day work.

Hey Jim, if you're referring to the Alpha Dorado, I agree wholeheartedly. In fact, I liked it so much I got a second - one in 154CM and one in 420HC.

The only folder I have that sees any real use is my Uncle Henry Stockman. More sentimental than useful, though.

I *always* have a Mini-Grip with me as well as a tiny Vic Classic. In my packs I've got Vic Farmers or OHT's as well as a full size Grip. In my little Ritter PSK's I've added the tiny Gerber Ultralight LST.

I have fixed blade knives too (Fallkniven F1, Mora, Buck) but most of the time the tasks *I* have can be met with the folders.

Neeman,

I post these photos every few months as a teaser. I've never seen these knives for sale outside of Brazil so your guess is as good as mine. They are made by Zebu of Barretos Sao Paulo.

I like to carry a SAK, usually one with a saw and then I also carry a one handed opening knife clipped to the cargo, or my front right pocket. Usually a spyderco.

I don't carry a folder for woods use. Heck, sometimes I even carry a small pocket fixed blade for edc. I like the simplicity of a nice small sheath knife. One, made by Mike Miller of Oklahoma, is shaped like a small chefs knife, and is about the size of a opened barlow knife. Another knife I carry a lot, is a Rosselli grandmothers knife, or a Busletto Balder. They do most of what I need to do. In fact, I fell so much in love with the Balder, I bought a spare just in case something happened to my main one.

I have little use for folders these days, preffering a small puuko type of fixed blade, backed up with a folding saw or small hatchet for camping.

you better hope the traditional crowd does not see this:eek:;)

Right now i am wearing out my RAT 1 folder. Had it for awhile and carried it for about a week then benched it. Now it is in my pocket daily along w/ my SAK Hiker. Double folder'd :D

FWIW it made its way back to rotation due to i now carry my BK11 as a necker and not in my front left pocket...

Why, it's called the traditional folders AND fixed blades.:D

Of course my edc around town is a pocket knife. I have a little Victorinox classic on my keyring that gets used a lot, as does my Vic bantam or Case pocket knife. But when I go off in the woods, a sheath knife goes on my hip. It's a small one, but it's still a real puuko capable of taking more leaning on in an emergency than any folder. Not to meniton that if I get injured, there's no problem opening it, or worrying about it closing when I don't want it to.

Basicly I'm imitating the men I knew growing up. Some of the rough old cobs that hung out at this little general store were some honest to God poachers and illeagal trappers. This was the late 40's-early 50's. They all had the basic traditional pocket knife of the day; a small 3 inch or so two blade serpintine jack. But every one of them wore on thier hip one of those slim Case or Ka-bar little finn knives. The one with the stacked leather handle and birds head aluminum pommel, and about 3 inches and some in the blade. If the small sheath knife wasn't enough, they usually had a small Plumb or Vaughn hatchet in thier go-to bag.

I just don't have much use for big locking folders.

This is my quandary. They are still a lot of fun. Large micarta Sebenza, Benchmade 710, Spyderco Military. Large folders that used to get a fair amount of use, that is now reserved for fixed blades.

Jackknife, i think you would approve of this one. It makes a good pocket carry fixed blade. teho-tommi from the kellam kp line

Mostly for deer hunting.

I like that one even if automatics are "troublesome" legally. One of these days I may break down and have one of our makers build a fixed gutting tool like the one shown. Puma used to offer that style and I keep thinking it would do a better job than the current "gut hook" rage.

Have you used the gutting blade much and if you have used a "hook" also, how do the two compare?

For serious outdoors (like a week long canoe trip), not EDC or day hikes, I've always preferred a fixed blade. Even fishing the knife is used many times a day and is just more convenient, especially since when I got started there wasn't much or anything that folded and was opened with one hand.

Now for day trips hiking or fishing I like the little Leatherman Juice instead of a SAK, and usually another heavier folder. Backpacking for multiple days I have been carrying the Juice where I can get to it for the tools but carry a Case Muskrat in a pants pocket to cut stuff like sausage and cheese, fruit, or open a bag. A folder is still the choice for EDC but I don't have much need for one other than occasional convenience so I I just keep one of those massive 2" SAK's with a LED light on my keyring.
