There are no length limits on folders that are carried CONCEALED in LA county or the city of LA. Carrying A fixed-blade concealed is illegal all throughout the state of California, in every county and city, regardless of size .
That's a tricky one because there's room for interpretation on the part of cops and prosecutors. My attorney advised me to carry any folder with a blade 3" or longer "deep pocket" or in a bag rather than using the pocket clip because a cop and prosecutor could interpret a visible clip as "open carry".Is clipped in a front pocket with clip and maybe a little of the knife showing open or concealed?
Wow so a clip alone could be seen as open carry? That's a tricky one because there's room for interpretation on the part of cops and prosecutors. I've seen people say that LA cops have never bothered them because of their visible pocket clips, but perhaps those people were just lucky and crossed paths with cool cops, or cops who had better things to do at the moment. My philosophy is- never push your luck when it comes to cops and the possibility of going to jail. Not when the law is unclear.
I live in San Diego and occasionally travel up to LA, and I always have my attorney advise me on the local knife laws of wherever I'm going.
Well that should be open, since it's visible to an observer. Is clipped in a front pocket with clip and maybe a little of the knife showing open or concealed?
You're welcome.Killarney thanks for the info. Do you know anything about a closed leather case on your belt?
You mean a terry frisk to see if you have weapons and represent a threat to them? A pocket clip would definitely be PC for a terry frisk with the LA law.I carried a CQC-13 all day yesterday, Long Beach -> East LA -> Downtown LA -> South Central -> Long Beach. At a property I was checking out, some cops parked behind me to bother some kids but I didn't interact with them and they couldn't see inside my pockets. I don't see how a visible clip on a pocket could reasonably be argued to qualify as openly carrying a knife -but I've seen cops mess with people over all kinds of trumped up nonsense, so who knows.
If it ever came to a cop snooping in your pockets, something would already have gone quite enough awry to necessitate a lawyer, regardless. IMO.
Words to live by! :thumbup:That's a tricky one because there's room for interpretation on the part of cops and prosecutors. I live in Los Angeles. The laws here regarding knives are actually very relaxed.
Then why not carry any other effective illegal weapon? The question and statements are not "what you might be able to get away with", which are highly dependent upon your appearance, bearing, and luck... but what is legal. Just because you can get away with it doesn't mean the OP can, or that your luck won't run out.I have carried a folder of pretty much every size and shape and never had an issue. The cops here really aren't interested in what knife you are carrying unless you are being an idiot. The city is too big and too chaotic for them to be spot checking people who are showing a pocket clip. Carry what you like, be a decent person, and you will have no issues.
