What is allowed in you area? There is a thread on knife laws in case it'll help you. Are you looking a traditional - GEC? That should be easy enough.

Both the county of Los Angeles, and the city (municipality) of Los Angeles have laws that say it's illegal to OPENLY carry any knife with a blade 3 inches long or longer (LA municipal code section 55.10 a and b, LA county code section 13.62.020).

There are exceptions in both the county code and the city code that say that this length limit does not apply to knives that are carried for legitimate work or recreational purposes. But it's not enough just to say you are carrying for work or fishing, etc, you might have to prove it in court. (LA municipal code section 55.10 c, LA county code section 13.62.030)

There are no length limits on folders that are carried CONCEALED in LA county or the city of LA. Carrying A fixed-blade concealed is illegal all throughout the state of California, in every county and city, regardless of size .

Is clipped in a front pocket with clip and maybe a little of the knife showing open or concealed?

What are you looking for in the way of tasks? Defensive? Spyderco, Cold Steel. Multitool? Victorinox. Traditional? Buck.

For daily cutting tasks the TuffLite is hard to beat and is a handy tool. But I'm no longer a fan of CS's micro serrations. I used to have an AUS8a Voyager with tanto point half serrated and learned to dislike the American reenforced tanto as well. Are you thinking of carrying both? If so, you'll get a lot of cutting power at a good price with CS.

The reviews on the Bucklite Max are excellent though. I like what I've seen so far. And it's a USA made knife (which may mean nothing to you, which is fine) and the price is unbeatable, even by CS standards.

That's a tricky one because there's room for interpretation on the part of cops and prosecutors. My attorney advised me to carry any folder with a blade 3" or longer "deep pocket" or in a bag rather than using the pocket clip because a cop and prosecutor could interpret a visible clip as "open carry".

I've seen people say that LA cops have never bothered them because of their visible pocket clips, but perhaps those people were just lucky and crossed paths with cool cops, or cops who had better things to do at the moment. My philosophy is- never push your luck when it comes to cops and the possibility of going to jail. Not when the law is unclear.

I live in San Diego and occasionally travel up to LA, and I always have my attorney advise me on the local knife laws of wherever I'm going.

Wow so a clip alone could be seen as open carry?
But when they say you can't conceal a fixed knife then not even the pommel should be covered by your jacket and the complete knife has to be visible.
In the same state...

Logic would dictate if a pocket clip on a folder counts as non concealed then this should work for a fixed knife as well. Just have some small part of the fixed one show and it's all non concealed and legal.

Killarney thanks for the info. Do you know anything about a closed leather case on your belt?

You're welcome.

I personally would regard a belt sheath as "open" carry. I was advised not to carry my Buck 110 in it's belt sheath if I was just visiting LA (not work or "recreational" related).

I don't know if there is any case law regarding whether or not a belt sheath or pocket clip constitutes "open" carry in LA, but I know I wouldn't want to be the one who becomes the case law. I would rather err on the side of caution than find myself up against the Los Angeles justice system.

I live a bit to the east of LA, and every time I have been through or in the beach communities I have made certain I have no exposed knife parts. I haven't found any of the communities around LA to be particularly knife-friendly either. If your budget is under 100 or you don't want to carry 2 knives, choose a Tuff or Dragonfly, or a sub 3 inch. So Cal residents seem to be really squeamish about blades unless they are small and have brightly colored handles. Carry a 4 inch in your pocket if you like, but you have to think about where and when you are going to use it. I have used a Yojoimbo or Manix many times in a restaurant to prep food for my boys, but I wouldn't like to expose them on the street or in a park. I don't remember anyone ever looking twice at my Dragonfly with the yellow handle.

I carried a CQC-13 all day yesterday, Long Beach -> East LA -> Downtown LA -> South Central -> Long Beach. At a property I was checking out, some cops parked behind me to bother some kids but I didn't interact with them and they couldn't see inside my pockets. I don't see how a visible clip on a pocket could reasonably be argued to qualify as openly carrying a knife -but I've seen cops mess with people over all kinds of trumped up nonsense, so who knows.

If it ever came to a cop snooping in your pockets, something would already have gone quite enough awry to necessitate a lawyer, regardless. IMO.

You mean a terry frisk to see if you have weapons and represent a threat to them? A pocket clip would definitely be PC for a terry frisk with the LA law.

Words to live by!

I live in Los Angeles. The laws here regarding knives are actually very relaxed. I have carried a folder of pretty much every size and shape and never had an issue. The cops here really aren't interested in what knife you are carrying unless you are being an idiot. The city is too big and too chaotic for them to be spot checking people who are showing a pocket clip. Carry what you like, be a decent person, and you will have no issues.

Please, share more information on how LA's laws are relaxed. The actual laws.

Then why not carry any other effective illegal weapon? The question and statements are not "what you might be able to get away with", which are highly dependent upon your appearance, bearing, and luck... but what is legal. Just because you can get away with it doesn't mean the OP can, or that your luck won't run out.
