Folding knife advice

Hi Guys,

I work in a office business environment and would like to carry a light weight locking folding knife that will carry in the pocket of slacks easily. The knifes primary use will be for just having some form of protection and daily tasks. There are so many brands that I do not know where to start. What do you recommend. I would like to keep the cost under $120.

Thanks,

Geoff

Get either a waved Endura for something bigger (around 4 inch blade) or for something smaller (around 3 inches) get a waved delica. These are a great knife for someone looking for a knife that has some self defensive capability. They are also light and strong knives, easy to carry. Both can be had for under your price point.

Imho a folding knife needs a wave in order for it to be barely adequate for self defense. In high stress situations out fine motor skills go out the window so practice waving the knife you get alot!

Waved Endura on the left, waved Delica on the right.

Here I am reverse waving my Spyderco Pikal from my left pocket. The little hook on the spine of the knife is the wave. It catches the corner of your pocket when you draw the knife so that way the knife is open when you draw it. (For self defense). Watch youtube videos on how to wave a knife and practice until it is second nature.

Benchmade Bugout. Or if you're willing to increase your budget, Benchmade 940 in whichever combination you like. I just gave my brother a 940-2 for his birthday and he's carried it at the office every day since then.

My first real knife was a pm2. It’s a good knife for everything. I have never pulled it out and drawn any attention either. The standard version can be found on the exchange for under $100.

Office environment and need of protection usually do not coexist. In an office environment, you want your knife to be small and light weight, sth like spyderco Delic 4 or Benchmade mini griptilian. For protection, you probably want sth large, stout, and quick to open. As said many times, knives are a poor choice for SD.

Inexpensive options until you figure out what you like and dislike and really want in a pocket knife:

Spyderco Tenacious
Byrd Cara Cara 2 G10

I will try to come up with suggestions but atm just want to say that a knife for protection/self defense is far from ideal. I will add there are plenty of brands to look at but key feature you will want is something with an easy one hand opening I personally find a flipper to be the best choice for speedy opening.

I've carried a Fällkniven U2 a lot in the office and it proved useful opening packages, cutting tape and making salads :-) No idea about the protection part.

It's nowhere near your budget but a cold steel Tuff Lite may work. Around 20$ it's small but I wouldn't want to fight a guy armed with one.

I will second the Spyderco PM2. you can most definitely find one new at your budget. It is light enough for slacks and will do what you want it for. Another choice is a Benchmade 551 Griptilian which also carries the form factor I suspect you want while remaining lightweight enough for slacks. Both of these allow for quick one hand deployment and can be closed with a flick of the wrist. I would honestly suggest more but lightweight is key to your needs and some self defense considerations are important here (I'm not going to judge. you do what you do).

EDIT: Another option is The We Knife 715 Ignition. 3.44" (around the same size as the other two)Titanium framelock flipper on bearings while still weighing just over 3oz. Another lock and deployment style that will allow for quick deployment. there wont be many in this style suggested because most will weigh a good deal more than what you want or is way more expensive than what you want.

Your brain and awareness are your best protection - use those first. But, having said that, when I'm in an office situation, I carry an Endura 4 FFG clipped inside my front, right (strong-side) pocket. It's very thin and light (3.3 ounces on my scale), and I've got one with the stainless steel clip (to blend with light-colored pants) and one with a black clip (to blend with dark-colored pants). If I want something even lighter, I go with a Manix 2 Lightweight (2.9 ounces!). It has the paperclip-looking clip, so I don't worry about the color.

Then, clipped to the inside of my front left pocket, I carry a small tactical light (Fenix, O-Light, 4Sevens, etc.). You can find several videos online on the efficacy of stopping a threat with a tactical light - just search YouTube. I've practiced to the point where I instinctively draw my light before anything else (knife or gun). Trust me, if someone is coming at you, and you blast them in the face with bright light and blind them, they WILL stop advancing. Works on dogs, too. And that gives you time to assess whether you need the weapon or not.

Hope that helps somewhat.
 So far as stopping an attacker with a tac light , it would be great to also know how to use it as an impact weapon / baton . Don't ever count on a light alone to stop a determined assailant . I'm not in disagreement with the post .

Have to ask why you feel you need a knife for self protection in the office? I realize we all get what we want regardless, but big knives and fighting go hand in hand. Just not for me. If I felt I really needed protection at work, I'd carry a gun.

Check out the Boker Urban Trapper. Slim and lightweight with a deep carry clip. It's not a super tactical knife, but it's certainly better than no knife at all.

The Kershaw Blur would be hard a great choice. Not "Scary looking", but time tested and rugged as they come.

Dave (Kershawguy) has them for a very nice deal

I also can't say enough good about the Kershaw Link - it is a solid knife, made in USA, and Kershawguy has the no-nonsense nylon handled tanto version with 440c steel for $35 delivered.

You'll need to put some padding in the back of your mailbox if you start ordering from Dave - he ships really fast. ;^)

Kershaw Blur. solid feel, not scary looking and the spring assist opens with a nice loud snap. I use it every day stripping cable and have not had sharpen it in 3 months. It can be had for 60 bucks at walmart and even less online.

forget defense, you just need an office knife. you need a massdrop gent. 2.4 oz 3 inch blade, fun to play with, lock up super snug. 100 bucks for the new run with CF or wood scales. get last year's plainer handle offerings for 70-80.

Either of these would be my recommendation...

Spyderco Native 5 lightweight
Spyderco Chaparral lightweight
