Photos Folding Saw Machine Co., #2 Folding Saw Machine

Hmmm...
I thought mine was 100% complete but I do see something that is missing on that additional pressure and guide bar.
This additional length of bar stock with a ring at the top to go through that loop on the carriage arm. I have no idea what it would do other than get in the way? (Evidenced by the bent one.) I don’t get it, would it help anchor the log?

This looks like a common thing, anyone know what it is or if I could get the same thing off an easier to find old timey tool?
Does it help support the saw until you can set the dogs for a horizontal cut?

Mmm. That’s a good guess.
It’s not doing much in this shot, just kinda going off into the gravel, but the saw is in an awfully low position for a felling cut. You could totally see how it would be useful for that though.

In fact if propped up on it here, it looks like it would be more equal to the back legs, flattening out his saw somewhat.

It would be easy enough to make. Looks like 3/8" rod, maybe 7/16. And a simple loop. Looks like the end might be forged to a point.

A fellow would have to want it off to have it off. So why did they want it off? Maybe only used for felling and a previous owner only used it for bucking?

Are there instructions for these things on the web somewhere?

That would be my guess.
Apparently the pressure guide was sold as an add on to newer pieces or a retrofit for older ones. But it’s not in the 1917 catalog that was reprinted. I’ll have to look further.

Could it have been driven into the base of the tree when felling?
Oooh! You nailed it!
I found the patent! It was applied for well after Marvin’s death in 1901 by a gentleman named Frank J. Pahls.

In the description and very rudimentary drawing it is listed at part R, a brace.
It states that “without this device the free end of the saw will sag but poor results would be achieved.”
It also says “A brace R may be used to support the end of the arm G, as shown one end of this brace is wrapped around the arm G and the other is adapted to be thrust into the bark of a tree. From above it will be clearly seen the tendency for the saw to sag at its free end is obviated and that it is properly guided to make a clean cut which lightens the work of sawing to a great extent....”

Interesting on the prototype they describe it as just being wrapped around the arm. But when it went to production they cast a loop on the arm for it.

This is cool! I got a copy of the 1896-97 Folding Saw Machine Co. Catalog it’s got a bunch of those great period pictures.

Those older stickers had the patent dates not pictures. The expensive #1 on eBay was like that.

I would love to know just what that art work in the "1893 World’s Columbian Exposition Award" is depicting because I am not getting it. I never said I was the sharpest tack in the shed, can someone explain it to me?

LoL. Here is a better rendering of it.

Perhaps Lady Liberty reclining on a Buffalo? A native with a bow watching a couple of boys playing? A few races covered and it's pretty American.
Second picture is perhaps lady liberty again dancing on the stem post of a boat the like of which I have never seen. Maybe a certain amount of artistic license here.

I just the last week found one of those saw jointers. It’s dated same as those in the catalog ithinkverydeeply posted if I find out how to post pics I will. Think it’s missing the side file parts tho

After further inspection looks like it might be a common patten date. So unsure of its origin as it has no name marking.

Is this one the same model ithinkverydeeply ithinkverydeeply ? It didn't have a price tag on it and I didn't ask.
I couldn't make out the writing...

Thanks for posting that! It sure looks like it to me! And it has that support rod. :(
The surefire way to tell just by looking from a distance is on the back which isn’t in your shots.
This pressure guide bar.

There are distinct differences between the #1 and #2 that can be seen here in the catalog.
