Some of you may recall a post made by 'Sioncool' with images of a similar knife. I contacted him and we discussed acquiring one of these for myself. After four months it arrived. Let's look at the goods......

Ce Sun is the maker. He is 34 years old and has been making knives for 10 yrs. Apparently he is a full-time artist/maker. 'Sioncool' (Xiaotao Wang) is a student in the UK who collects a LOT of very fine tactical knives. He posted some images of his work a while ago. On the forums, his reputation seemed to be stellar and he is the importer/agent for Ce Sun, who does not speak any English. He gave me this little bio sample (which I edited for clarity):

Ce Sun, nicknamed 'Slave of the Blade', who was born in Dandong city of Liaoning province. His father is an art designer who has talents in watch modeling and design, and his mother is also a talented artist in handcrafts. Influenced by his parents, Ce is passionate on handwork from his childhood. He had shown his talent at eight, when he made his own handcrafts, vehicle and Chinese ancient weapon models, by some materials simple as cardboard. When he grew up, he turned to working with metal handcrafts, which aims to combine the Chinese tradition style with western popular blade design. After ten years, he has developed designs and procedures which are his from own experience. In recent years, he has greatly improved his blade designs and has explored his various styles of engraving/carving.
Every handmade blade from Ce could be considered as uniquely designed, carefully made, and especially inpoured with pure Chinese classic style. As a noted blade designer, he has his own studio to work with.

Here is a look at what it takes to build and design one of these:

Because of my position I find I like the slightly unusual for my own collection. I am exposed to the finest knives all the time. I'm also very open when it comes to admiring works from makers in other countries and cultures. My collection has works from So. Africa, Canada, Brazil, Czech Republic, Hungary, Japan, and now China.

This knife is VERY well made. It is also larger than I would have thought from the original images I saw, and that is why I added the size comparison shot. It is also VERY heavy at over a pound. It has 'heft' :) It is incredibly solid when locked open and requires a firm effort to unlock the mechanisms. The blade opens and locks in a traditional lockback design, while the folding guards swing into place and are locked with two strong detent balls. When this is unfolded, the end of the blade housing (buried in the subhilt guard) has a small nylon wear protector built into the channel so the tip does not touch any metal.

He has done a great job on handrubbing the blade finish, but I do not know if this is forged or stock removal, or what the materials are. Sorry. Maybe sioncool can fill us in.

I find it a captivating and engaging work that would be admired by anyone with any savvy at all in this arena. The manner in which everything fits so precisely is staggering in complexity, and gratifying in it's forethought.

Adding into the engineering is his delightful full-relief engraving, which he spared NO shortcuts. He is very proud of his heritage and the 'Made in China' notation on the backspine is a reflection of this. (I wish this would have been placed on a less-prominent area, but I will accept it nonetheless as his mark.)

Overall I am greatly pleased by this purchase and I hope you will enjoy the visuals, too!

I would have never even thought of making a folder out of a subhilt. I think it's impressive.

Super kick-ass knife Coop. Not only is it a mechanical nightmare but the dang thing looks good and is proportioned very well also.

That is, by far, the coolest knife to ever have "Made in China" on it.
He he he! I thought so too. Its opened my horizons a bit....

Gig: You keep it short and to the point. I love that smilie!

Don: Yeah, it's shapely, too!

Wow... Was it easy to communicate with him? How about the payment?

sioncool had reputations delivered on this and the USN forum that were very good. He communicated often with me, and in the end I trusted him with a Paypal payment when he showed me some quick final snapshots. Full payment only when finished.

He told me the wait would be about two months from my original inquiry, and it came on time. He showed me some snaps. I asked about filework which was missing at the time, and he quickly said if I would be willing to wait he would be travelling back to China and would have Ce Sun go over it. And he did. That delayed it another month or so.

Sioncool (Xiaotao) sent it as promised and well-packaged. I promised to him a full pictorial and review. Here we are!

Price was under what I would have thought. Somewhere close to a G-note.... Email him, please.

That is absolutely amazing. Knife porn at its finest. Perhaps I should look into another bank loan.

most impressive. I hope that he joins in on the forums--I would like to see more of his work here, as well as hearing his opinions. Great score, Coop.

I'm reminded of the endless threads which we tend to regard our collections upon whether they are a better investment value, or if they will drop off the planet in resale. Smart discussions.

If I had deeply considered the estimable value in those threads I might not have proceeded. Who would spend a lot of money on a knife made in China?

Each time I hold this and open it and enjoy it, I understand that 'Buy what you like' is a compelling force, indeed.

I won't say what "I thought" it would cost, but that is substantially less !

Holy Ba-moly. . . . .that's quite the bargain !
