Folding utility knives...ick!

You want weird, how about this mask he had the first time I swung by there?

Jacket and mask seemed to have have burnt up when he managed to set his camp on fire in a big way.
Lol, you win

You dont have to sharpen it. Let that sink in. YOU DON'T HAVE TO SHARPEN IT!!
I always sharpen my utility knife blades, it’s just a sickness I have I guess.

They have a solid place in my toolset, though I don’t carry one in my pocket. Keep a couple sliding Stanley’s, the older good ones, in each tool box, and I do have a Milwaukee folder with button lock that is well made, flips open and closed, better than it should be for the price.

Blade holder elements are stainless steel. I do like it as it is my home desk knife and is used for mail or packages all the time.

I don’t know how you came to the conclusion he was a thief. He could have been picking the bikes out of the trash. Fixing them and giving them away.

That is the most ridiculous thing I have read all day.

I am sure the people sleeping surrounded by discarded drug syringes in our city have been finding discarded bikes and fixing them for others.

Open up your eyes man.

Windsor is known for bike theft.
Here's a Facebook group for people to try and find their stolen bikes.

I see bikes in the trash all the time. Having a pile of bikes doesn’t make you a thief.

I was just offering a possible reason, granted it was far fetched.

You don't live here.
You don't know the situation on the ground here.

You don't get it.
You don't know the level of theft we have now by drug addicts. At our largest mall, security often doesn't even try to arrest them now due to it not being worth the risk of getting poked with a used syringe.

We have needle disposal boxes the size of mail boxes all around town now.

It. Is. Bad.

Went on a camping trip two weeks ago, coast of Oregon. Great time.

All of the rest rooms have a needle disposal box. I thought perhaps there was a rash of diabetes on the Oregon coast or such.

Nope, apparently they hate having campsites strewn with used needles, so there's a spot for users to dispose of them.

Interesting thought. The campsites were so expensive that I really didn't expect a bunch of drug addicts. But I guess you gotta prepare for them.

I did use the folding utility knife on that trip. It was primarily being used as a money clip, but ended up cutting some crab line whilst crabbing.

Had I thought better, I'd have taken one of my automatic knives. They're legal down in Oregon. Next trip maybe.

Did you go to Newport, OR by any chance? Lived there a few years recently and the homeless just use whatever campsite they feel like unless someone kicks them out. I have a younger buddy who still lives there and his job is to kick them out. And yeah, many of them carry utility knives. Beautiful area other than that.

I don't like folding utility knives.

First of all, they just look ugly.

Secondly, cutting things is the reason/excuse for having all my cool blades...if I were to use a utility knife for "real use", then why have all the others, eh?

Now I know, some people see them and think of manly factory workers.
I think more of this:

This homeless guy managed to burn down his entire camp pretty much, and now sleeps in just a carboard enclosure.
He said he was doing fine, but it didn't seem like it so much.
His blade of choice? You guessed correctly...a folding utility knife.

I've met many other homeless folks that were able to live through the winter without burning down their camp.
They had hatchets, Buck knives (or clones), or even the occasional "Zombie Killer" knife, but not a folding utility knife.

So shun the modern plague of folding utility blades.
Spend your cash on something cool, and know that you made the correct choice. :)

This is in extremely poor taste to critique someone living in a box that they should have a better knife. It seems like an honest oversight on your part, I'm not shaming you or coming at you. Just some friendly advice, let's all please try to do better than this.

I think it's quite obvious why this person has the knife they have. This post makes me incredibly sad.

Newport indeed! I stayed in a yurt at the South Beach State Park. We didn't see any obvious squatters, but we weren't looking for any either.

I've stayed there before, but this was the first occasion where I used a folding utility knife. I usually bring one of those little serrated Victorinox $3 jobbies.

It's always something incredibly inexpensive when I go camping with Little Bro.... intoxication begets losing stuff, and losing a Vickie or Gerber FUK is okay by me.

Well after spending some time with the CHUB Flipper, I've realized I don't think I ever really had anything against folding utility knives. My objection stemmed mostly from the fact that all the offerings simply weren't nice. Most are cheap imported junk that's hardly worthy of hanging with the likes of a set of Klein pliers or Makita driver. But this changes things.

Now this is a quality thread. Not only do you get to criticize what other people like, you get to compare them to a homeless person who sleeps in a box at the same time. Well done OP

Who also uses IV drugs, steals children's bikes, and almost burns himself to death.

He didn't sleep in a box till he burned his camp down.
He did steal children's bikes before though...they just got burnt in the fire.

He did make a better choice than the homeless guy I saw on a homeless outreach walk last week though.
That guy was cooking drugs to inject behind a homeless shelter, and had an opened (and completely illegal in Canada) balisong knife on the bench beside him. At least the guy with the folding utility knife wouldn't have been arrested by the cops for possessing it.

At work I'm kinda known as the guy who doesn't use the utility knife in his tool bag at all, and only uses actual knives. I've thought about giving them a try again, but I figured I've talked way to much shit about them to be seen with one at this point.

Can you post any photos of how you use a knife?
