Food prices expected to rise

Hey guys, takes this info with a grain of salt...

A client of mine who works in trading commodities stated that they are expecting an unprecidented rise in food prices this year. He didn't give me a time line, but he stated that he's begining to store some canned food and such. Understand that this guy is a "fly by the seat of his pants" kind of guy that would much rather go eat at an establishment as opposed to make something at home.

Figured that some of you guys are rather independent people, hope this info is useful to someone.

Yeah, i'm not a "Doom and Gloomer", but I figured I'd just pass this on. Only reason I considered posting this on here is because I know this guy well enough. There is no way he'd consider going to the grocery store much less go there for the purposes of buying items to store.

Given various factors, probably inevitable this year. I've heard similar predictions from other sources. Food and fuel and directly linked. Gas goes up, then the cost of food goes up. They've gotta ship it somehow, trucks, trains, planes all need fuel and that of course affects a companies bottom line, therefore the cost of food goes up. Weather conditions play a factor too. Been way colder in the south this year than normal and that's affected quite a few crops grown down south during the winter months. We'll see what happens though, hopefully not a big spike.

But basically what I heard was fuel, food and clothing were all expected to jump this year. Just what we all need....a spike in the essentials.

The cost of many (if not most) commodities have already gone up tremendously. Everything from gold to cotton to coffee. Huge price increases over the last couple of years. I expect the trend to continue myself.

You can spot this at the supermarket yourself. First, the prices remain the same but the size of the product gets smaller. This happened recently at Wal-Mart with coffee, as just one example. That's the first step as the manufacturers try to "ease" things into play.

I'm not really a doom and gloom guy either but there is a definable, predictable consequence when more dollars are created than is wise. Dollars are worth less, meaning products are costing more. That's the "monetary inflation." Add to that, increased demand, increase fuel and labor costs, poor weather and you get "price inflation." Add those two together and you get...screwed.

When aren't costs of something rising? the trick is to get a raise to compensate.

Its amazing how cost of living goes up but the pay rate stays the same.....:thumbdn:

the continued devaluation of the Dollar will certainly lead to higher food prices, as well as energy costs. We are mega screwed.

this is just a culmination of:(increasing effect)

the increase in minimum wage

gas prices rising

corn prices going up(more used as ethanol in fuels), which is the main ingredient in almost everything

greed

I don't remember prices ever going down, so yea, they will go up until some kind of financial blister bursts.

It already is happening - look at what is happening in Tunisia and in the middle east. Those countries try to subsidize food and energy but it is becoming more difficult.

It's not going to get better either. Wheather all over the world basically has been EXTREME, it's causing, and going to continue to cause alot of problems. Gas here just jump up from about 3.08 a gallon yesterday or the day before, to 3.15 a gallon today.

But the tricks to not be a glutton and hord as much as you can. It all goes back to supply and demand with many things when people are buying others are jackin up the price while the jackings good. Gun prices for ARs and ammo have still not come back down from the scare ... Nothing happened other than people sat on guns dealers jacked prices then the consumers followed suit and jacked up the resale... It was deemed ok because everyone was doing it ... I'll buy what I need or start a garden and raise goats lol

While on a close subject, I was at a gas station I frequent I was talkin to the owner about how just about late oct early november it costs me 94 bucks to fill up my truck and by new years it went up to 108.. He told me he has been in the business for 15 years and it happens every year and dec-Jan is the peak then it lowers to a few cents higher than the low of last year. Prices will go down. But next year today prices will prob be a penny or two higher. For me that relates to .50-$1 per fill up

Corn production is down 5% due to weather extremes and this will cause a huge domino effect like in meat prices etc.

We can all stand to loose a few pounds anyway. Just wonder when the next blow will come from?

Grow your own. Become a producer, not just a consumer. It's very easy to keep a few hens for eggs, or have a 15'x15' garden. Plant some nut or fruit trees. Every little effort helps.

Prices on everything are going up as the dollar gets weaker.... it's only inevitable.

Interesting post though, thanks for the info!

Just a thought but there are already people in this world starving.
Then you have a few hundred people get sick from Salmonella in the U.S. and the FDA want's millions of eggs destroyed just to make sure no one else get's sick. Almost all eggs have traces of Salmonella. That's the nature of chicken's, if you handle and cook eggs properly it's not an issue.
Then millions of pounds of beef recalled due to a few more people getting sick. Just like thoroughly cooking pork and chicken, beef, especially ground beef must be cooked properly.
If people don't learn to think and act for themselves apart from the government, the food situation is only going to get worse. I bet less than 2% of the world's population are farmers now.
