Thanks so much for doing what you do. EVERY firefighter I have met has always been so cool to my kids. My kids think the sun sets on firefighters and I think that is really cool.

Here is the reason I bring this up. Today was my sons 3rd birthday party and we had it a local VFW park. The kids were already having a good time - Pinata, swings, presents, bubbles, and the like. About half way through the party a HUGE firetruck pulls up, running lights, sirens, and the works. About eight firefighters jump out (many looked to be probies - some were even EMS) and said - "We heard there was a birthday party going on today!" They were no invited, we did not call, they just saw us and came down.

The kids went NUTS! They hopped up on the truck, looked at all the stuff, and generally had a blast. The firefighters answered all their questions, let them run the sirens (a little) and it was so friggin cool. It made the kids day. This is just one of dozens of examples of firefighters being real cool to my kids and generally being good people.

Thanks for all you do. Keep it up. Lord knows you don't do it for the money - maybe a little kid worship can help sweeten the pot. ;)

p.s. Check out those bare feet. He is a naturalist in the making!

Thats awesome. Youre welcome man, thats what makes my job worthwhile. Its rare that im not gettin cussed at, hit, threatened, puked on, or crapped on, so the people that appriciate what we do is rare, but awesome. I dont do it for the money, I would take a pay cut to do what I do.

Very, very cool! Thanks for sharing and Happy Birthday to your son. (My youngest turns 3 today too.)

Cool. sounds like a good bunch of guys. We're having our "emergency services" festival may 31st. It's mostly for kids. My FD is the host and all the surrounding FD's will be there with apparatus, also EMS, Rescue, and I believe Wings (air evac) will be there. My FD just bought a 22' air slide and a moon bounce too.

In truth most of us have as much fun with this kind of stuff as your kids do :)

But its nice to be appreciated

Thanks for putting a big smile on my face and a little tear in my eye. The face of your little guy in the window is truly priceless.

Fact is, if most would admit, we do it for selfish reasons. It makes us feel good, at least sometimes.

Thanks again,
KR

That's so awesome. I was just like those kids and wanted to be a firefighter when I grew up :)
(taking EMT cert this summer! hopefully I'll pass)

K SPAR just remember BSI Scene Safety and then ABC's and you'll be fine. GOOD LUCK

Fire Fighters have the best job in the world!

KR - he is saying 'Cheese'. By the way - I sent a very similar e-mail to the KFD thanking them too!

I call bull shit on you. Feeling good is not running TOWARD a fire. Feel good is a by product of doing a good job and saving lives. I think you are too modest.

Most don't call potentially burning to death a feel good experience. I think there is more to it.

Like someone said to me once: "There are some bad cops, there are some bad doctors - there are no bad firefighters." I have seen that in my experiences.

Your correct to a degree. I should point out that I was speaking as an EMT. I work as a volunteer on the Town fire department (we are one stop shopping) but I am an EMT and SAR instructor in the department. I was talking about the Emergency medicine aspect but don't kid yourself. They like what they do also. :D Some day I may take the FF class. Just really doesn't excite me that much to be honest. My department is small enough that even as an EMT we do just about any job there is except any that requires an airpack or ladders. Mostly, that is just interior firefighting. We drag hose and use the hurst tools fairly often.

We all work together and most are really great guys and of course girls too.

That's great, good bunch of folks there!

Been about 15 years since I worked EMS, but I still miss it.

ha! we're completely opposite. I have a passion for Firefighting but couldn't care less about EMT. But I had to take EMT-B and realized that I do actually like it. I will probably even take intermediate toward the end of the year.

I love it. Even though its part-time. So, thank you for appreciating us. And EMSRescueguy hit the nail on the head, I do feel like a kid riding in the Truck.

 First Responders are the hero's our kids should be idolizing, not professional sports stars. You'd never see Tiger Woods running into a burning building to save a cat.

There is no better sense of relief at an accident scene or structure fire than seeing the fire trucks and EMT's roll up.

1+ on that!! Hell yes we do!!

(taking EMT cert this summer! hopefully I'll pass)

You'll do great. I sure! Good Luck!

Ummmmmm.... No. I run towards the fire cause its a hell of a lot of fun to go fight 'em!! Dude, they turn us loose on a house and let us BREAK stuff, and give us Halligan's and Axes and Chainsaws to do it!!Gratnted, it sucks for the home owner, but we are also pitching as much of their stuff out the window to save it as we can.

I do love my job....

Oh, by the way... Tell your kid Happy Birthday:D

Hah ahah aha haha hah ahahahahah... That reminds me.. A couple weeks ago I was on the Dept Rescue/Ambulance. We got a call for a Structure Fire. So as we roll up, the first in crew pulls the home owner away from the door of his house, which was RIPPIN!!! He screamin about his dog, and how he has to save it. First in crew runs in, finds the dog collapsed in the living room, and brings it over to us. We administer O2, suction it's airway, and in general clean him up, and the little guy MAKES it! Crazy!!

Somewhere, I also have a pic of our Battalion Chief, up in a tree on the end of our 75' Arial Ladder, RESCUEING A FREAKIN CAT!!! That pic was worth a drink or two!!!

I retired a year ago ,27 years, firefighter/ EMT. I dont miss it a bit. I hated to see people lose everything they owned , or get hurt ,or worse.

Oh, city firefighters. I anticipate us forest firefighters will be too drunk and surly to be around kids.
