I retired a year ago ,27 years, firefighter/ EMT. I dont miss it a bit. I hated to see people lose everything they owned , or get hurt ,or worse.

It makes us feel good, at least sometimes.

You reflect why I said sometimes. Everything isn't a save. Sometimes we only save the foundation. Other times the best we can do is keep them alive so the family can say goodbye to a warm body. Sometimes, unfortunately we can't even do that.

I should add though that there are a lot of professions one can do that are not nearly as honorable.

That’s why his picture is worth so much IMHO.

We protect lives and property. Risk a lot to save a lot, risk nothing to save nothing.

Rescue Companies and Rapid Intervention Crews are heros, some who save heros.

The mentality of the department should be, "everyone goes home".

God made firefighters so police would have someone to look up to.

That is probably true. But - hey - they gotta grow up some day!

First in crew runs in, finds the dog collapsed in the living room, and brings it over to us. We administer O2, suction it's airway, and in general clean him up, and the little guy MAKES it! Crazy!!

Somewhere, I also have a pic of our Battalion Chief, up in a tree on the end of our 75' Arial Ladder, RESCUEING A FREAKIN CAT!!! That pic was worth a drink or two!!!

man that's awesome. dogs get taken by smoke so fast. At a fire we had here, I actually saw a mutual aid chief give one mouth to nose. lol poor guy didnt' make it though. I worry about my dog in his crate during the day. I only latch one latch with the delusion that he could escape. Cats in trees though.... you know what they say. You've never seen a cat skeleton in a tree now have you?

Now you guys fight some fire!!! I did a season of Wildland of it kicked my a$$! You guys will see more heat in a month than I will in a year, maybe two! My hats off to ya! Thanks for savin the Forest, so we still have someplace to go play!
