well some of youal have seen the display i made
and the buck box i made to carry 70 knives in
well i am going to the blade show in ga this year
and i am going to display my knives for the first time
so i have been bussy choping wood and such
to have some thing to show them off in
and carry them in a tad more fancey then the BOX
the wood on frames is chestnut from a log home dated before 1752
the brass door is a post office box locking door by Corbin from 1958

so what do youal think?
i need the comments in time to fix maybe before i get to far along!

I like it decaf Dave,

How much is your 120/110 safe going to weigh? All I can say is wow the restoration of the wood is amazing Dave!!! It looks great. Please post a photo of the finished product.

well i estmate them each to weigh apx 40 lb with 60 knives in each on th transport boxs
on the display frames each will hold about 27 or 29 knives...
the wood is wonderfully old looking even refinisned as i did it
edit = chestnut has a LOT of finer then babby hair splenters!!!
it is diffcult as it is full of the old hand cut skiny nails that break
the hard part is removing the metal ! i have found one bullit
and tho it is wormy chestnut i have found no bugs...
it has a warm chocklet moka collor and after the cutting and scraping with
blades i put the nails BACK IN the hold they come from as close as i could!!
so in sanding the raw iron shows in the holes! quite an effect!
trax has some it it ... unfinished and simi finished
hay trax what did you think of it? made any inlays of it yet?

Thanks for shairing Dave...
I read about chestnut wood before in the foxfire books.
It is great stuff , doesent rot and last a long time.kind of like BG-42.
I
have only seen black and white pic's before ,so thanks.
Very nice looking displays.
Are you going to make any 110 scales of of it?
Jeff

yes i have a 2002 polish blade with sclaes on it curtersy of Ark's Knives!
more info on chestnut~ there are reasons it was not a furnture wood
it has a LOT of splinters!!! very fine ones at that!
showing the nice grain makes it inconsitent in finishing and it is open pore wood so it takes a LOT to seal it!
many think it is a type of OAK when they see it but oak dont have the open pores like it and there for dont get wormy as fast.
if you look you can see were i put a oak dowle in each corner for streanth
and it is lighter with the same finish on it..
hey Dave, looking great. One question, second pic- what knife is that? i like it!
well that was a opps in bieing in the post and no time to edit it out
it is a true proto type one of 6 made after
intional conversations with probus refering to a folder
the frames are 440 steel with a coating.
the holes were study as to how large and were they could be put and
if it would interfer with the spring or not and
if it was a safty issue with the holes
there were 3 with clip 110 and 3 with drop point 426 blades
all 6 were made by leroy remer
of the other 5 leroy has 2 and some else has 3
this is the only one that got away from buck employees

Hi there!
WOW  !!!
What model is the titan-handled (?) one in pic nr 2, from the top???

I have recently got my first ( used though!) Buck 503, and now I am really in to the drop-point styled 500:eds!!

Can anyone tell me wich in the 500 series is the largest knife ???

I have now learned that there are other Buckknives than the 110, 112 :p

( Even though I have just won a 112 in an auction for 10 usd!! :D )

See you!

OOPS!

As in this case.

Still wanting to find out about the largest of the 500:eds though!!

Hey Dave can you post a pic of the 2002 posished blade, with the Chestnut
scales?

I think in the fox fire books they did use the chestnut for rail fences.
Thanks again Decaf Dave.
Jeff

OK
the top one is what the titatum handled knives ended up looking like
thenext two are the chestnut scales by arknives

yes in fox fire chestnyt is a durable wood logs that fell 80 years ago can still be sawed for lumber... fence rails last and last almost as long as a buck knife!
hay 110 if you tell me what you want to do with some i will try to pick out a foot best for it!

Those are nice looking scales on that 110 Dave.

The chestnut came out good.Is that the same peace of wood as your

frames for the knive display?

Jeff

NO i have over 100 board feet of it
some has sweeter figure then other
some is from deeper in the board or off a board that is in better shape
it all has a moka look to it some darker then other
the scales have only a clear wax on them
NOTHING else at all and look most like the raw wood
oil finish will darken some
lacker will darken almost as much
polly some less
i like the oil best with a polly over it
makes it richer looking and brings out the highlites best
another note new cut ( by that post civil war)
does not have the oxdation as the real old like i have
and the patina goes over 3/4 inch deep from both sides on a 2 inch thick board...
oxdation nothing like it ...

Nice looking displays, and nice looking knives to! Can't wait for Atlanta! :)

joe / trax both of you have some of that chestnut.....
ever try it on a knife or ax?
a oil finish brings out the glow in the figure
with polly on top it it stays bright
i like it better then oak
but again working with it can have some
sharply pointed disavantages

as far as atlanta goes
i am getting excited~!

Dave: Be sure to get pictures of your display at the show. I'd love to see how it looks when you get it set up.
