??? for the more knowledgable than me??

1080 or 1084 should be available from some of the knife suppliers. Aldo has 1084 coming soon. Other similar to HT steels are Cru-forge V, 80CrV2, 1075. Aldo, as well as some of the others, should have some of those.

Yea I looked for 1084 myself but couldn't find it at the time. Ill try to see if anyone has it in stock. Its a little less forgiving I believe anyways. I didn't know what cruforge or 80crv2 was. Thanks

CruforgeV and 80CrV2 are alloys of 1080/1084 with a tad of chrome and vanadium added. they are excellent steels, and HT easily.

I love CruForge V, it was made to be heat treated easily. It has more than 100 points of carbon in it, and if you want to get the most out of that extra carbon, and the vanadium carbides, you need temperature control and time control. It comes super super soft, probably 98% spherodized, so a thorough normalizing cycle should be performed as well. Heating CFV to 1500 and then quenching will give you a blade like 1084, but you're leaving A LOT on the table. Aldo is going to have 1084 on the shelves VERY SOON.

I checked aldo his site says out of stock on the 80 crv2. I didn't see cruforge on there unless its called something else.

usaknifemaker.com had some cur-forged when I checked. I didn't look at availability but they have a category for it.

just checked usa I think the smallest they have is .250 and only 1in width. great if you forge I guess. im only a stock removal guy atm. alpha has 1080+ in stock yes I am ordering some. cant wait to try it out. its cheap to. cant beat that.

so with the added chrome I would assume they are more rust resistant as well??

No, it takes 12% chrome to get rust resistance. A smaller percentage will give increased toughness. That is why 5160 and these alloys we are discussing are great for tough use knives.
