The farmer is the best victorinox tool. Has all the right things for difficult/unplanned situation. Ie: limited tools, no big blade, hopefully something to cut up large pieces of wood. SAKSAW RULEZ! For non alox, go with the hiker because it has the philillips tip, and you can take screws put of the stalls while taking a poo in public places...:D:eek::D

I voted "other", as I usually have a Hiker on me.

If I wanted something similar in size, and had to pick from the listed knives, I'd go with the Fieldmaster.

Happy hunting.

Scenario: The world has experienced a major catastrophe. Could be a Walking Dead situation (I know, just for fun though) or an EMP and you are on your own situation. IF...... and I say IF because this is just for fun.... You can only have ONE SAK... what do you choose? I can see so many arguments in so many ways.

Remember guys, this is STRICTLY an SAK thread. No reason to bring up how Leatherman would be better etc.

Let's go!

Bonus points for photos!!
There's plenty of reason to bring that up... however... Knife, scissors, both screwdrivers (magnetic!) and a BOTTLE OPENER! This catastrophe calls for the Rambler!

I went with the Swiss champ because it has everything you might need to cut things, light a fire, repair cover such as tarps or tents, and repair other weapons or equipment. Bette too have and not need than to need and not have.

My favorite SAK has always been the Explorer. It has all of the essential tools for my needs from trivial to essential.

I've got 5 of them placed in various locations around the house & in various bags/tool kits.

PS: Just took a look of each of the other models mentioned & the Explorer is still my favorite because it has the best assortment of tools (not too many or too few) ; doesn't include anything I don't need (like a saw) & includes a magnifying glass which I need because of my poor near vision. ;)

Ideal from what I own, Rucksack or Pioneer X. Reality based on what I might have in my pocket or is stashed in one of my bags is going to be a compact or explorer.
I want to open cans, have a reasonable knife, and a second tool, such as the awl, scissors etc. I'm happy with just one extra as it means one less problem to solve.

Highly considering the Explorer. If it had the Saw as well, I would jump all over it. IF the Huntsman had the inline phillips, I would grab that lol.

Blasphemy coming:

I used to be an SAK fan-boy. Way back in the 1980s, I worked overseas in the oil business as a "mud-man". This took me to forein countries and out to working oil rigs in the field, both desert and offshore. I carried one of the SAK multiblade pocket folders. Don't kn ow the model . . .it has been 45 years or so. . .but it had saw blade mini-pliers and a scissors etc. Got it through customs wherever they sent me and it did the things I needed it to do. For heavier duty cutting, I carried a Buck 110 in a belt pouch.

Time passes and things change.

If I were doing that sort of travel and work again, I would swap out any model of SAK for a multitool. My current EDC is a Leatherman Wave, but about any other quality tool would do. My Wave has all the tools I needed the SAK for and has others that it didn't . . .and they seem bigger and more rugged. I would still need a larger folding knife, but a Buck 110 might not be the one either. I managed to break or wear out several in the course of doing what I did every dsay.

SAK are great knives. I carry a small one in my suit pocket (tweezers, toothpick two little blades) and I love it. But there are better options today when it comes to SHTF/Apocalypse/Zombie scenarios.

Nah, not Blasphemy. I am sure a lot of folks would agree with you, even me at times. This is just a fun thread for SAK only options.

I will say that I have carried almost every model Leatherman and every model SAK.... The Leatherman tools are more durable I would say, but the SAK tools are much more pocket friendly. I do not like wearing anything on my belt, so everything goes in a pocket. I have tried a Leatherman in the pocket, did not like it at all. A SAK Explorer for instance, disappears in my pocket.

Understood and respected.

I often carry my Leatherman in a belt pouch slung horizontally. Almost un-noticeable that way . . .even when wesaringa suit. Other times, it is clipped to the edge of the right front pocket of my slacks.

If Leatherman upsized the Wave design and layout and/or upgraded the steel to a higher performing formulation, I'd probably buy that.

Np doubt though, SAK in about any model is elegant and made to a high standard.

My vote, (and my favorite SAK aside from the classics), is the huntsman.
You have your straight edge, and your saw blade, and your scissors, w/ a bunch of the SAK tools like a can opener, bottle opener, flat head, awl, but in that off chance, in a post apocalyptic scenario, you and your crew come across that fine house in the woods with a nice wine cellar, the corkscrew (which can be used for other things as well), can open that fine bottle and make it a nice evening of celebrating your survival another day, (in moderation of course, gotta keep your wits about you just in case).

Starting back in the 1980's I carried a Huntsman (except it doesn't have that hook thing) for 15 years, when I was flying. It saved the day once, when the #1 flight attendant had her corkscrew break. I had to go back to the galley and open the wine bottles for the first class passengers. And everyone was happy!
