For what single task do you use your knife the most?

My edc opens packages more than anything, BUT I do more food prep than any other knife use. So, if my edc was my goto knife for everything it would be very different - probably something like a thicker than usual 10" chef knife. That would get some attention.

Being a security blanket?

I had a day surgery today, and felt uncomfortable in nothing but a hospital gown and boxers. I told my wife that I'd rather be naked with a knife around my neck than dressed like that without tools. Mind you, I'm not talking about it being a weapon—I've never used my knife like that and don't select knives with that criterion in mind at all. (Okay, maybe it's on the list somewhere, but near the bottom.) I'm talking about being prepared, with a knife being the single most important tool you can have on you.

Hey Brother, hope you are healing, and doing well. I agree, I feel the worse when I'm without a blade.

I use my knife the most for opening packages........that contain other knives.

I know where that goes...
Buy one knife, use it to open 10 packages containing knives.
Use those 10 knives to open 100 packages containing knives.
Use those 100 knives to open 1000 packages containing knives.
...
get a bigger house to hold all of the knives.

Cutting tape and boxes are definitely the most single use task!

My peace of mind :D I fondle sharp and flick open because I can and otherwise carry a knife every waking moment. Too many practical uses to note here.

I do some of that too, 500mcm and down.
Sometimes 15kv multi conductor armored and shielded cable, also 5kv stuff... all the way down to lowly 14/3 SO cord.
Also alot of scraping corrosion off old conductors and connectors - and cutting through plastic/rubber/cambric tapes and into steel nuts & bolts to disconnect motors.

Then there's processing small game (deer, squirrel & fish, cut fruits, sandwiches, light kitchen duties... tomatoes, onions jalopenas, ect.

It's hard to say what my knife does most of.

Lucky for us JP thats what these tools are made for:cool:

The closest I can come to that is cutting up my sandwich every day at lunch. I have an injury to my front teeth so I can't bite, I have to cut up my sandwich into little pieces and eat them one at a time. This week I used a ZT 0561, BM 913 and Spyderco Manix 2 for that task.

Food prep for lunch/home and at work i mainly use it to scrape and pry with.

The tape on boxes annoys me, so i have seperate serrated knife for that stuff

There is no single task I do most. My knives are multipurpose tools and get used a lot for a lot of things throughout the day.

It may sound strange, but I use the magnifying glass on my 1991 SAK Explorer more than anything, for looking at fine stampings on antiques and other old knives and stuff. That thing has been extremely handy. Otherwise like most here for packages, envelopes and the occasional other little chore. And of course the screwdrivers get used. Locked myself out of the house a while back and my trusty SAK got me in.

Like Baronyx, if we are including kitchen knives, then food prep is the numero uno knife task. I am the primary cook in the family, and cook 3 square for my wife, my son and myself, so I am very well acquainted with my kitchen knives.

My other knives are used mostly for opening packages. I do almost always keep a knife on me (and several in a car if I'm out and about), and they see lots of random and unforeseen uses.

Recently I've been trying to learn how to make axe handles from scratch, since at this point I don't have a draw knife I've been using a belt knife to do the rounding after my bandsaw cuts. I feel like I've used a knife more in the last two months than I have in the past 5 years. I still don't have the hang of it yet though, so I am sure my Erapuu has plenty of work ahead of it.

The last two months aside, definitely kitchen work.

I don't think I can name a "single task for which I use my knife most".

I'm an urban homeowner. My house is over 30 years old. It requires constant fix-its. I carry a pocket knife for all sorts of small cutting tasks associated with those fix-its. I don't think I can name a single one which I perform most often.

BTW, knarfeng, I like your avatar, the SR-71 is one of my favorite flying machines. I saw a rumor a while back that they had taken it out of mothballs for some reason or other, but I can't confirm it.
