For whom the bell tolls

I remember, Bwray. I didn't know he got banned. Do I understand that he was banned for posting a private letter? I admit I don't get it and have not seen the thread that got him banned. What happened?

Edit: OK. I get it.

As a relative re-newbie here...I have something to suggest to those whose feelings may be hurt or whatever. Take a week or two off from posting or even lurking here and see what happens. You will get a better idea of how much you truly do or don't matter in the grand scheme.

When I was banned the main thing I noticed was how much more I got done around the house, how much more time I spent in my woods and how my credit card balance got WAY lower:D ;)

I have only the vaguest idea what this thread is about, but John Donne sure did rock! Nothing removes annoying panties like a well-crafted metaphysical conceit.

I don't know, Josh. I think if I tried this one I'd probably get slapped.

John Donne said:
SONG.

GO and catch a falling star,
Get with child a mandrake root,
Tell me where all past years are,
Or who cleft the devil's foot,
Teach me to hear mermaids singing,
Or to keep off envy's stinging,
And find
What wind
Serves to advance an honest mind.

If thou be'st born to strange sights,
Things invisible to see,
Ride ten thousand days and nights,
Till age snow white hairs on thee,
Thou, when thou return'st, wilt tell me,
All strange wonders that befell thee,
And swear,
No where
Lives a woman true and fair.

If thou find'st one, let me know,
Such a pilgrimage were sweet;
Yet do not, I would not go,
Though at next door we might meet,
Though she were true, when you met her,
And last, till you write your letter,
Yet she
Will be
False, ere I come, to two, or three.

Hmmmm ... maybe your secret lies in the delivery. Maybe if it is read with the face getting sadder and sadder, in the end looking completely forlorn, then the temptation to slap will be abated. Even replaced, perhaps, with a desire to prove the poet's philosophy untrue.

Hey, this could work ...

It may be something that has to be done, but we pay a heavy price each time.

There are few places where one can interact with such a disparate group, and that is a good thing to me. However, there are limits in any group. Lax or strict, those limits help define the group.

Is there a cost to putting someone outside? Sometimes yes, and the price paid depends on how others are offended or disturbed by the step. But "each time"? With respect, no. Sometimes the price of allowing them to stay is so disproportionate to any price in sending them away that the decision should be easy. One ought to recognize in such cases that "something has to be done" and do it with a clear conscience.

Opinions will vary.

Howard--Holy Sonnet XIV might be a better choice. Of course, some folks might read religious implications into the thing.

Batter my heart, three-person'd God ; for you
As yet but knock ; breathe, shine, and seek to mend ;
That I may rise, and stand, o'erthrow me, and bend
Your force, to break, blow, burn, and make me new.
I, like an usurp'd town, to another due,
Labour to admit you, but O, to no end.
Reason, your viceroy in me, me should defend,
But is captived, and proves weak or untrue.
Yet dearly I love you, and would be loved fain,
But am betroth'd unto your enemy ;
Divorce me, untie, or break that knot again,
Take me to you, imprison me, for I,
Except you enthrall me, never shall be free,
Nor ever chaste, except you ravish me.

"We are in the vanguard of the newest sociopolitical movement in Man's history, and at a turning point as important as the Flood or the invention of the wheel."

Munk, I appreciate your enthusiasm for this place very much!

But could we have a reality check here please?

1) This is a knife forum, one of many such forums on BF and on KF. It is designed and operated to be a web-based ambassador for HI knives; to promote their discussion, use, and ultimately sale.

2) You are one of three moderators on that forum.

I really am not trying to be negative, but am having some difficulty equating that admittedly laudable enterprise and statement of fact with the storied or real destruction of all life on the Planet, or the invention of the wheel.

I've been warned, threatened, not talked to, sniped at, gossiped behind my back, ridiculed, openly insulted, and held in comtempt. I've also been loved by the vast majority of you, a gift I'm thankful for every minute. The positives in our forum far far outweigh the negatives.

See #'s 1 and 2 above. Whether you are hated or loved is of course important to you, but should have no bearing on these two points. The HI Forum is about HI knives and their discussion, use and sale, and transcends any one indivdual. In other words the Forum is not you, and you are not the Forum.

We'll stumble sometimes. Your three moderators have one quality in common that is rock solid and I would bet on every time: they each of them, in their own way, seek the Truth so intensly, that their own egos fall by the wayside.

OK.

I dunno. Some pretty "deep" thinkers believe that the Internet is the actuation of the "Information Age" and will change life as we know it -- is doing so even now. A khukuri forum ought to be on the cutting edge of such change.

Dear Norm;

The internet and borderless communities are unprecedented in history. Though I don't pretend to be one of the deep thinkers Thomas Linton refers to, you don't need a cave painting to see which way the wind blows.

See #'s 1 and 2 above. Whether you are hated or loved is of course important to you, but should have no bearing on these two points. NEver said I was or it was- You just did. How many times this last year have I said the forum is all of us and everyone's??? too many to count. Norm, you are disqualified as my biographer, a job I'm sure we can both agree you do not need nor want. LOL

I say borderless communities are new to the world. This has nothing to do with my role here, and neither does my observation of the abuse a moderator typically takes. You mixing these two to suggest I said the forum was about me is pure nonsense. It is no more about me than it is about you. of that I'm sure we both agree.

unless you mean; I am he as you are me and we are all together,
munk

I don't think ground should be given here- I think HI forum is ahead of the curve. If you don't think so, check out another forum, look at the extent and depth of needs being met, and the overall communication level.

Man has a long ways to go, but HI forum is better balanced than many marriages.

And what we are doing here, is being done all over; I just think we do it a little better than any other net place I've seen. Doesn't mean they aint out there.

We've said many times, What does this have to do with khukuris? This place cannot be simplified into 'just another knife forum'. Quotes mine.

I agree. I said as much in another thread awhile back.

Men communicating (and women!) about deep personal issues free from homophobia--actually asking for help--and getting it from other men. Men who ride harleys and motto guzzis and collect huge knives and firearms, soldiers and writers and jocks and geeks and massage therapy students?! All in the same place learning from each other and 99% of the time doing it with real respect and caring.

Vanguard? You bet your ass!
