For you Kershaw fans some question for you.

Making a variation of the Skyline is essentially like printing money. They sell well, and are rightfully loved. I say do another 1760, can't go wrong.

However trying to put bearings on a knife like the Skyline would be pointless. Current gens of it flip perfectly, and if someone hasn't bought one by now at their current price they're not likely to actually pay what it would take to tool up for a modified version to accommodate that kind of redesign.

A higher end steel would also be a bit of a sketchy endeavor due to cost. S30V has been done, and it worked well. If you're not going with the Sandvik or BDZ1, then I'd stick to either S30V or CPM-154,

Cheers.

Were it up to me, for a American-made knife benefiting vets, I might go with an American-made steel rather than Bohler. M4, maybe? CTS-204P?

This brings up an interesting point I had not considered.

CPM-S110V has been already used By KAI and they already use Bohler steel(Elmax and M390) and not the domestic equivalent.S110V knifes are currently highly sought after especially on an economical knife.M390 is right behind. We can throw S90v in there , but I don't think Kai has ever released an S90V knife.Any of those steels on a sub $100 offering should sell well in my eyes.
How about an CPM S110V or CPM S90V Skyline? How long would it take to sell that model out?

I was thinking the S110V would do very well as they already made knives in it at higher price points and from my understanding the Spyderco Manix 2 with S110V has been selling very quickly due to the blade steel and price point at around $110 last I checked. Get the more popular Skyline model in S110V at a good price point and it's a winner.

I am thinking some blade etching saying it is somehow made to benefit vets would make it classy, the type of thing you find on more traditional slip joints. It make it far more personalized than the normal limited runs they do and make it seem more collectible and it still make a great user for those of us who want to use it.

Hmm CPM S110V =)

You also have to consider that the skyline uses a single liner - so another liner would be required for bearings. I suppose it would be possible to put a steel washer over the g10, but even then the material would have to be milled extremely thin to accommodate the bearings and washer. Just my 2 cents. :)

Had not considered that etching idea very interesting. Also good point about the Manix 2. =)

since its to raise money for military....if you go skyline, how about digi-cam g10 scales, blackwash blade;-)

A very good point. But the goal is to sell more which will raise more for veterans. So the temptation to select a model that is already very popular is great.

But, as there are currently a ton of different models for the Blur and Skyline, your model of the Skyline and Blur might just look like another variation of the dozen of other variations on most knife websites. The hardcore knife enthusiast might appreciate the different steel and know what you are trying to do, but to most people it would probably just look like another variation from Kershaw.

Do you think you could get a different handle material? If so, a fully blackwashed Skyline with aluminium handles would probably stand out. Or a fully blackwashed Swerve, with aluminium handles. :P

Skyline, gray G-10, CPM-154 blackwashed blade. I think it would sell quickly at $ 75-80. I'd buy one.

anything skyline with good steel and under $100.. make lot of it, it will sell out quick.

Remember on the BF Skyline the decision to use S30V was to keep the cost below $100 and the minimum order was 500. I don't know the price of steels above the quality of S30V but surely they would be pushing that dollar amount if not exceeding it.

I really like the idea of the Ram in M390!!!! The original Zing (without the groves) in a premium steel would be great as well. I think there is a big desire for blades this size.

Perhaps Minuteman watches could be the outlet for Kershaw boutique runs using higher end steels with the veteran cause being the focal point.

Thomas thank you and your family for supporting those that served our country.
