For your consideration

Got my blank cleaned up the edges and took off the surface rust left from the waterjet. I'll start firing the guard and pommel in the next few days.

I think you will benefit from cutting off the guard lugs on the blank, and crafting a guard that can slip on as a press fit from the rear....that is, however, your choice.

STeven Garsson

This is a very good point. Looks like you have enough width at the base of the blade to shoulder it and slip something over the pommel swell.

i dont understand why that would be preferable to bolting on the the other 2 guard parts i had cut? im trully not trying to be a smart ass i just dont get it? could either of you explain why its better?

It's for durability. I've done some pinned guards myself, but they're not as secure as a single piece machined to fit.

does it make a difference if im not pinning but bolting them on? im going to tap one of the exterior guard pieces and threw bolt it. I like this because i like the ooption of easily disassembling everything as well as if i ever want to i can have a different guard shape cut and swap it out plus im not particularly skilled in fitting things and the bolt threw method will result in no gap a perfect fit.

Before I answer your questions more, I would like to know what kind of research you have done on sword/knife construction?

iv done a lot of reading and searching iv seen pinned guards and guards made of basically a bolt running threw the blade. I have read about the fitted and pressure fit guards. I dont know how to explain it better. Im sure the way you suggest is the more traditional more common and probably better way of doing it. Im doing it the way im doing it because i know ill get a better end result based on my abilities and if i mess it up i still have my cad drawings and i could easily cut a couple more and try again.
Plus I really like that in the end i will be able to fully disassemble it.
I don't mean to seem like i don't appreciate the input i just don't like that method of construction and im not comfortable doing it that way i guess.
Oh! and iv handled poorly fitted swords that start to rattle and it drives me bananas with the bolt threw construction if that were to happen i can hit it with some thread locker and crank the screws down.

got the guard and pommel countersunk and tapped today. very happy with the fit still needs a little filing and sanding to make them totally flush but i ran out of time today.

1/4" thick less than 1.5lbs is good for a single hander. Instead of sandwich hilt you can make the in house micarta by rolling the epoxied cloth around the tang and then sending it. Looks a lot cooler than sandwich tang.

I like the look of the sandwich tang and that i can remove all the bits and pieces if i want. Iv already made the handles just haven't posted pics yet, but they are jade g10 over black liners.

Rust will be a factor.

rust is always a factor with knives but iv never had issues because i take care of my blades. Most of my fixed blades have removable furniture and rust has never been an issue.

Raising my old thread from the grave,
Finally got this sent to Will Neese for grinding today. I, very excited that this project is moving again. This is where I'm at I went with black liners and jade g10 but I might remake the handle slabs I'd like black much more I think.
I did something a little different with the handles instead of countersinking the machine screws I counter bored a pocket and used some stainless inserts.

Just noticed my pic didn't upload right on my last post.
Hey do any of you guys know any kydex sheath makers that do sword sheathes? Possibly in Canada but if not I might be willing to send it to the states.

I love the design!! When do you think this will be finished?? I will have to look out for it !

Not sure Will is going to grind it when he has time, but I'll be sure to update the thread when I get it back.

Bringing my old thread back from the dead because i finally got it back from our own Will Nease. he did an amazing job grinding this for me. still needs to be heat treated and finished. oh and ignore the gross died jade g10 handles ill be remaking those in black at some point.
