Met my first wife in Germany. Reforger lol Not to many people remember those. 2AD Forward had the 2/66th in Germany The 1st and 3rd was out of Hood. We would TDY on occasion. Good talking to ya. Good times for sure. Well not the ex-wife part lolwell i checked the FAQ for the issue of being able to upload images per Fli.kr I guess and man you really have to jump through a millions hoops just to link an image? I haven't a clue why i just can't pick from my "library" a paste it in. but Im not a mod and don't run a site... so its off to learn how to get my knife images online here.
Im trying a goldens Spicy mustard to patina to see if that works. its the only mustard at the store that have vinegar listed Before water on the ingredients label. Probably doesn't mean much could be .0001% more vin than h2o but we'll see
Talk to you later Tanker.
OBTW. when i got to my unit it was awesome.. the unit was out in germany for reforger and i got there after they already left...So I was 24 on and two days off for CQ for over a month.... got a lot of fishing in at stillhouse and becton lake...then my unit got back and I found out why we were 98% OPERATIONAL READINESS. holy crap. motor pool at 5am not PT and done at 11pm ..foooooreeeever it seemed.
You should have etched before you stripped. The blade coating is what holds the etch in place. I fear that you might have washed the laser etch printing awayOk guys so I guess it’s fine to ask... I used Golden’s mustard and let it sit for three hours and washed it off... nothing not a line not pattern nothing. The FC worked great... I used nail polish and splotched it around some and dipped twice in FC for 20 minutes each no longer cause the paint pen marking didn’t hold up. But I got some nice color contrast and love it... I am going to redo more and longer on my day off
I am very concerned that the mustard trick isn’t working at all. Nor is the electro vinager salt thing
I’ve already stripped it and etched it with FC but I want to know if it’s real. Maybe the two places I went to were blowing smoke up my.... nose.
Also on the bk-9 it has the Becker name on one side of the blade and bk-9 name on the other but should it be etched into the metal or just printed on it? I took off the black coating with jasco and after cleaning the names were still on the knife... however after etching they are pretty much gone. Should they disappear with etching?
I'm gonna try that onion thing. Thanks eveledLoosechange. If you pay $10 for a basic membership. You can add pictures to your posts easy. Just in case you did not know.
I only use onions for patina. Stab knife in wait 2 days. Cool patina, super easy.
The older 9s were roll stamped. But that process had the potential for stress fractures. So the process was changed to a laser etching.Paying it is then thanks I’ll be back later with some images
Btw sorry I misrepresented my statement. I wasn’t trying to patina or mustard patina the already acid dipped blade. It was the metal under the hadnsle I wanted “practice” on that didn’t take. However I did you tube and see some bk9’s have the name inscribed but they are older than mine
I also read that 1095 cro van isn’t truely 1095? Something about it not being true because the vanadium, chromium, I believe Nicole and a few other minute traces of other metals
Is it true it’s not ... sites have been giving it another nomenclature with a 500**** desigmation
I agree, moved. The Warrior I think this would get more traction in the Becker forum. I'm not a metalurgest I'm just a guy who likes knives. And talks off topic a lot.
That's true, etching should be done before stripping the knife...Not sure the order of the steps you've taken? Deepening the Etch should be first before stripping. Very important not to have any oil or dirt on the etch. I use rubbing alcohol to clean it. Same with forcing a patina clean firsthere's some pics

Now would be the time to strip the paint if you wanted to![]()
