Forced mustard patina not working on Becker bk-9

B61C20A7-598A-44A2-96EE-A5875A2D43FA.jpeg Yeah yeah. That exactly what I figured... ok so my ferric chloride etching does work and it doesn’t look bad... it’s just a bit light... so Wednesday I will re-etch. I don’t have a stencil cutting machine but I do have some self adhesive vinyl and an exacto knife.

As for the patina. Well I’m just going to let that happen naturally since no mustard I’ve yet to try works...seems like I’m going to have to eat a lot of hotdogs soon just need relish... hmmm maybe relish would work. J/k

So now the BK-9 is eaqually dull and dark dull but beautiful and oiled..

My first post, and yes I did read FAQ and typed in multiple ways on different forums to find an answer and alas no luck as of yet so here is my very first post
...
I know that KaBar uses the term 1095 Cro-Van
...
although the zytel handles could be better... so Micarta will be on the list

i won't speak to much else now...

but ...

1095 VC is not a term. it's a thing. that's what they use. it's not code. it's the real thing. this is a good basic steel. it should etch easily.

zytel... could be better? it's a bog standard glass filled polymer. it's SOLID. chemically and physically. it is beyond the standards of crap plastic handles.

i can understand if you want micarta ($$) or wood or something else? but seriously, to dismiss it? jeeeeeeeeez dude, that's cold. it's better than you get with customs.

that said, you probably need to clean clean clean your steel, chem strip, neutralize, and rinse... never had a problem myself, my i probably was OCD.

indeed I am pleased with the handles... I am going to texture them only a tad bit since the knife is going to be used often in desert, rain, and monsoon when season hits. I don’t mind them they are good but just appear “cheap” to me... but hey it’s only a 100.00 dollar knife.

The chemical etching worked well however next time I have to plan it out better than just sponging on some nail polish. Like your ocd... maybe I should have carded more and not been so hurry hurry hurry. My Fj40 been sitting 10 years on stands cause i want I it done right and make sure I’m happy with it

I do have another b-9
And an esee-6 but not sure what steel that one is... yet

So I’m sticking with my other bk-9 to try to actually think things through on

I think I’ll do an etch with some graphics for a few minutes with only a bit covered then peel and do the whole blade covering up some alther graphics.:

what I’m looking for my next bk is the metal of tHe knife itself, a little dull etch and them a darker etch at the final etch

I think if it like when I do my scrimshaw I do an coat wipe and then a different etch line and coat that way the first etchnis good and by the time I get all my scratches and wipes done I have multiple dark colors

Everyone’s been great so far thanks

Ok so back to the Kabar bk-9 question... I’m hearing I’m suppose to etch the knife before I strip it... but how is that going to be possible to etch when the knife was coated with some sort of black coating on it? Whew maybe be this simple etching is just too complex for my small mind lol! Seriously though how do I Etch first then strip? How will the etch.... oh wait you mean mask the knife then etch then remove the mask yes? That’s what I did but alas nothing so I’m going to find some HC knives at some local pawn shops if I’m lucky they will be Becker’s if possible. I pawn hop a lot and know some people. I’ll let you know what happens.

Going to re etch with FC the Becker later this week
The new Becker's come with Etched Logos if you want to deepen them, that is something that needs to be done before stripping. Deepening the etch makes the new logos look like the old roll stamp logos. If what you are after is just putting your own design or force a patina on your blade than the paint has to be removed first. Hope this clears what's been said

why texture them?

as shipped, you could slather your hands in grease, pull the knife from a bucket of oil, and stab the living shite out of a granite stone, and your hands should not slip. this is a thing.

the smoothness prevents blisters on bare skin.

slippage does not happen, by design.

glass filled reinforced nylon is not cheap. it's strong as F.

in 30 years of Beckerdom, a few blades have chipped and shattered, almost always abuse...

but i've not heard of a single instance of someone breaking handles ever, in normal use. ever.

you call them cheap?

i'll also mention, for lols...

"it's only a $100 knife"

right :D

find a better knife for twice the price. three times the price. do the the review with both.

go :D

you might even find some. no doubt...

but don't confuse price for value and quality. that's a mistake.

next! :D

1095 awesome another blade to try to ruin!! . Ok it’s not ruining, its embellishing So i want to reestabkish something cause sometime I try to say something that isn’t quite correct but i think is at the tome just not the right way.

Bladite... I don’t mean to reference that the handles were in fact cheap only that they appear to me cheap as in well... inexpensive cheap... not poorly made or designed cheap. So my fault there. Hopefully it will be a long time before I have the need to stab the sh*t out of rock

The value I think is great for what I received. No argument there... I really don’t spend too much on knives since I like HK’s too much... and I did buy a benchmade HK and a p30s the same day

digress from the Becker topic sorry

Seriously if I thought the Becker was imperfect for what I need, I wouldn’t have bought two

Definately appreciate the insight thanks immensely. Now which other Becker should I look into? I do think the Becker bk-13 is my next one ...to fit the pocket on the sheath of the bk9
