forge. I need a forge.

Here are a couple of shots of my forges. Not the best photos, but maybe you can get the idea.

The vertical is made from thick-walled pipe with an inside diameter of 12". By the time you add a layer of inswool (minimum of 1" thick), that narrows down the inside. It is around 15" tall.

I have a "back" door the same size as the front door in case I am working with longer pieces. When not in use, I close the back door off with fire brick.

My horizontal forge has 2" of insulation. The next one I make will either be longer, or have a back door. It is not really deep enough for long blades (over about 10")

With a gate valve, needle valve and propane regulator, you can pretty much dial the temp right in.

One of these days, I'm gonna get me a solonoid valve and rig it up to my digital read-out unit. That way I can pre-set a temperature, and the solonoid valve will kick the gas on and off to hold that temp. Pretty sure Fred told me that is the way he has his set up.
