Just ran across this thread in which a guy says he sucessfully forge welded D2. into a billet. I'm awaiting more info.

necroposting, but I figured 10 years later some schmuck like myself comes by and tries it:
You can successfully forge weld, but it requires VERY hot temps.
The problem, is the cool down:
Cracks happen, and it forces you to dig down into the billet at the edges.
Still no telling what is inside the billet, but unless you have an oven to cool it down properly, I would avoid it.
