Forged In Fire joke

My assumption is that not a lot of "traditional bladesmiths" own a full sized knee mill or are very comfortable setting up and using one.

I am a bit surprised that I haven't seen at least one or two smiths slotting guards or some similarly basic work on it though.

I super wished we could use that mill. It sits there begging to be fired up.
It's not hooked up, just sent I believe by JET, a sponsor for the show.
Anyway, if it worked, there would probably have to be two of them- there's two of everything else, except the power hammer, and there should be tow of those.

Bummer. Figured it was something like that since there isn't even a vise on the table.

Are there two forging presses? I thought there was only one of those too.

And why don't they turn those forges 90 degrees so they don't create hotboxes between them? That's silly.

One thing not common knowledge, and rarely mentioned, is that ALL participants are required to sign a non-disclosure agreement. It is very strict and they can't discuss the filming, details about how it is put together, what the participants are paid, any scripting, created shots, or other parts of how things are done and the order they are done in. The penalties are severe if they do. They are given a set or rules of what they are to say and not say.

Actually that is common knowledge.

That is for every single TV show a person appears on and in this case was made clear from the very first contestants on the show who came on the forum to discuss the show.

This thread almost makes me sad that I don't have cable TV. Instead of watching Forged in Fire, I spent about an hour this week on Instagram watching makers cut paper instead, and I LOVED it. :D

Ok, guys, now that maker 2 is out of the running, let's talk about round 2:

Maker 1: We need you to flub the epoxy. You have 2 options: a) Grab this 24 hour cure brand, that shouldn't even be in the pile for a 3 hour competition window, or b) grab 2 bottles of resin, but not the hardener, or 2 bottles of hardener but no resin.

Maker 3: We need you to drill your scale's pin holes 1/64" smaller than the size pin you're going to use. Also, pick something really brittle for the material.

Maker 4: We need you to burn up a couple of drill bits while drilling out your tang for your handle. Make it as noisy as possible.

Ready on set? Lights, camera, ACTION!"
Had me LMAO!

A great synopsis to some great moments.

In all seriousness, i love most of the episodes. Am amazed at some of the work produced, and sometimes amazed at how poor some of the home forged work turns out. I'm always impressed with the integrity of the contestants.
While I doubt I can pull off many of the challenges presented during the first two stages, I do know a few smiths that can forge and finish a beautiful blade in 6 hrs, so the context is not rediculous.
I was super impressed with JDs damascus blade last episode and wished he had grabbed a couple slabs of micarta for the handle!

Listen to Walter Sorrells experience on the show

Yes, I watched that myself, and it doesn't seem like violates any of the NDC agreements in his video. If he had I'm sure it would be down by now. It's still shows a very good insight to the making of FiF and I enjoyed his video.

Same reasons they have flare up on cooking shows

Fire gets people more camera time.

At least with cooking I can understand having overheated oil burn

The only way for the floor to burn is if the tv people coated it with something.

Yes, flare ups are done for entertainment, that is what they are selling it is their job.

I'll flare-up the hell out of that place an set the whole floor on fire! :D

I'm guessing the floor is just painted. I have worked in a few shops that have painted floors, keeps oil and crap from soaking in and it's easier to clean.

when JD Smith went for the camel bone I was yelling at the tv "no JD no!" I was rooting for him so hard, but slamming bone scales on in such a hurry seemed like certain doom . . . .

I wonder if we will see any of the contestants pull out the torch, work the edge and do an edge quench?

I don't remember the maker, but I believe someone did do the torch and edge quench on one of the earlier episodes. Season 2 maybe.

It was the Pata episode (season 3, episode 11). That judges were SO excited to see him do it.

ETA
Actually.... not so sure now that I'm correct. I've watched too many back to back. I do remember the judge being very excited though.

It was the historical recreation guy. "oooh I've been waiting for someone to do this!"

Edge quenching a blade may actually help some of these makers stay in the competition.
