Forged in Fire: Knife or Death

So am i wrong in thinking you can use both sides of a double edged blade? Have the rules evolved to disallow that? You can still use a forward lanyard and spin the handle over.

I am used to using a forward lanyard to further secure the knife in my hand, hence my previous comments.
If I remember correctly there were no rules against using both sides of a double edged blade.
I also do not remember them checking the tightness of the lanyard to your wrist.
That said, there is no reason you couldn't leave the lanyard a little loose enabling quick rotations in hand.

However, 80% of the edge of the blade I used will still easily slice printer paper and sections will still shave.
I can understand why you would want two edges, but I certainly don't think it is necessary.

Well... you definitely don't need a honed cutting edge to chop ice, bust a crate open, explode swinging water jugs or snap dowels. Save your edge when you can afford to.

If I can't be a contestant, I might be willing to donate a blade to someone who would try to use it in the manner that it was designed to be used.

I have a revised design, in mind.

maybe... lol.

I don't know who the bald host is, but from the way he talks, you would think he's a TV wrestling announcer.

Toss him and put Travis on the lead commenter. He's a naturally witty boy, let him loose.

Travis's one canned line is going to be pretty stale sooon.

Rick, you would steal the show if you were on. Lol

That is Bill Goldberg a pro wrestler since at least the 90s.
I don't think they can replace him since he is the most recognizable person to a general audience.
I prefer FIF, but watching my family's reaction to both shows, I think knife or death might do well.

CARNAGE!!

Back in the 70’s there were basically two camps, one argued that the forged blade was superior and the other said that bar stock was already forged and the little bit of forging by a smith wouldn’t help. The knife makers guild and Bob Loveless and the ABS and Bill Moran were the two groups.

I’m not sure on the exact time, but in the late 90’s or early 2000’s the guild promoted a friendly knife competition that included all knives/blades, not just forged or stock removal. The blade sports have been fun to watch for me and fun for those who participate. I believe the quality of heat treat, design and geometry in knives have improved because of these competitions. Organizers thought there might come a day when the competitions would be aired on TV, ESPN maybe. The day is now here.

The format will improve over time and with more experience. This show is good for knife makers/making.

Who won the first contest? I would like to take a close look at his knife, edge geometry, etc.

I'm glad there is another knife show, but I don't really care for this one.

Watching the competitors go through the course made me cringe at times.

Goldberg is OK, but the other commentator needs to go.

That is Goldberg, he alone will bring more people to watch the show just from his popularity.

I've seen both episodes so far and the one comment I have:

IT APPEARS (from the tv viewer's perspective)........that there is NO EXCUSE for the time penalties in the second stage of round one that *almost* everyone incurrs.

Good entertainment! But like FIF mo better. I'll watch it every week.
I've been pretty close picking the winner or runner up from their short time with Travis. ;)

This weeks episode had some odd knives. One big sword that broke multiple times, a guy using a butcher knife and a bowie that Travis described having an edge as thick as some knife spines.
The knife thrower dominated. Some of the challenges were different this week.

I watched what Is the 1St episode With my wife sitting on the couch together last night.—————She watches FIF reruns like a Treky watching Star Trek!! LOL ..I told her this is the new offshoot show of FIF I was telling you about ——//- She asked me, Whom are those two block head announcers? LOL ——-And the bald guy sounds like he should be in Special Ed ———- My wife’s an educator! ;) .. She recognized Travis as the winner of two FIF’’s and said, Well he knows a lot about knives! Why isn’t he an announcer ???LOL!———————————————/——-I understand that this will eventually bring more folks into the knife world and will improve over time!!—-///- I wish I had recorded my wife’s comments during the show,, you guys would piss your pants laughing at her comments as the wife of a maker!!:D Too funny! I replied with the best usually comment to ones wife... Yes my Dear!!:D ——-No disrespect meant to any that may have children needed special attention, .. That was a very off color comment by my Educator wife! Something about Goldberg??

The only person they could replace Goldberg with is, I dunno, Stonecold Steve Austin. I did like the show though. Less reality show, more cutting. I think though that the best knives for this competition will quickly become more apparent. And prevalent. And then theres the one guy with a butcher knife or a rat tail tang pakistani knife

Just saw the first one, it was kind of fun. Oddly I think my wife enjoyed it more than me. Probably because she was ready to be bored as she is watching FIF.
So is this the modern day gladiator arena? The show has to get better I think in several ways, and likely will.

It would be pretty fun to make a knife for the show. They will surely change up the cutting challenges over time, which could make that a difficult prospect.
I'm surprised there aren't two dozen designs showing up in this thread. ?

The show is strangely reminiscent of the early days of the UFC when all these odd characters with different skills came out and then quickly more or less converged on what is effective.
It was pretty clear that the thin swords and the butcher and Bowie knives weren't going to work.
In this show, we have already seen multiple examples of "my good friend forged it for me" go wrong. If I go on there my blade will certainly be something like 3V with a professional HT from Peters.
From what I've seen a cross between a larger comp chopper and a kukri, maybe with enough handle to two-hand it for some cuts, would do well.

Who won the first contest? I would like to take a close look at his knife, edge geometry, etc.

Jo cowboy, can’t remember his last name.

Hoss

Jo Smith, his knife was an enlarged Competition Style Cleaver like used in Bladesports.

Those obstacles were precariously balanced and started to rise very quickly.
My group had very strict instructions to not to swing above our heads.

Personally, I have been very surprised at how much carnage the ice block has caused the swords.

Ok here it is. My Knife or Death Competition Parang. 22 inches of murder and hate and 0.300 thick CPM 3V. I have no experience in cutting competitions though I don't believe this is a typical cutting competition, so I've tried to design something optimized for the challenges I saw.

The handle is a hand and a half. Get two hands on it and pop the hips like Barry Bonds when you need to. Choke up and 1 hand it when you don't. Recurve gives the blade a biting point for getting into the corner of boxes or buckets. Fuller and full flat grind with distal taper to reduce the weight and try to limit fatigue. Twine wrap handle, if you have to wear gloves, lets be grippy. Height of the blade should stand up to a baseball swing into the ice, the hollow grind should be protected from the majority of the worst damage to save an edge for any finesse cutting. If I get a chance I'll try and do a 3d model and figure out what she'd weigh.
Thats awesome. I would totally use that on the show! Love the design.
