Forget Survival knives get a shovel !

Not John Wayne,

Steve McQueen and Yul Brenner.

The Vid just makes you want one to throw in the truck.

Just think of all the crap you could have torn up with that as a kid. Hey get one for your In-laws kid for Festivus and turn him loose, you would be his favorite uncle and the In-laws wouldn't talk to you again.:D

I'd like to see an ACTUAL review/testing of longevity of this tool.. If its the standard stuff the chinese typically put out (without quality control) I doubt it lasts..

I'd just like to see it tested for its actual ability, yeah the video looks cool and shows its functions, but for how long? one go around?

If you go onto eBay look up Chinese military Shovel. On there they ran about $85-89.

After watching that vid. I have to tell ya if I was in a jam and that's all I got. It would definitely work. I'd like to pick one up, but maybe a cold steel for now.

Hmmm...$85 is a bit steep. Interesting tool though, and perhaps worth it if it's durable enough to do all of those things long term.

That's what I was thinking too that it was a steep. In the long run you wont have to worry about breaking it as much. Then again, it was made in china and it was mass produced. So quality control might not be up to snuff. I could be wrong though. ;)
I guess sooner or later someone will get one and do a review.:)

It slices! It dices! Awesome!
I really dig my CS special forces shovel...it makes me feel...special.
;)

Oh, BTW, for all you fans of Chinglish...this is a quote from the Ebay page selling them:

1. Combine 18 functions which makes a real miracle.

2. Combine the functions of digging, sawing, chopping, cutting, picking, prying, hammering and measuring perfectly.

3. More functions, less weight. Save your strength and time which reflects humanity.

4. Fine materials and good craft, further more, 268 process procedures and 48 inspections, make a perfect quality.

5. This product is widely used for single soldier, auto equipment, driving and camping.

Me wikey!

For all you movie trivia slackers..that was the theme music from the western "SILVERADO" with Glenn Scott, Kevin Costner and Danny Glover.
I like my Gerber E-tool, and this one looks cool to. I beat the snot outta my Etool in the Army, and I dont recall to many breaking, maybe one or 2, but nothing comes to mind.

EDIT: I just listened to it again, and I dont know what movie if any...but it sounds like the above films score.

I'd rather buy an 85 dollar miracle shovel than watch a movie with Kevin Costner in it.

Hey I liked "Silverado", especially when I was younger. I have the DVD on my shelf now.

Take my word for it, the typical chinese production that we see 95% of the time in the U.S. isn't the same that their military gets.

I guess if they can make a decent SKS, they should be able to make a decent shovel.

When I was growing up, I used a WWII American e-tool extensively. Joined the Army after they came up with that folding black thing but got lucky. One kid was issued a 1945 REAL e-tool and I traded him in a heartbeat. One marked "1952" resides under the back seat of the "old" Cherokee and I was just (literally "just" - I have a tab open for the seach) looking for a second one for under the rear seat of the "new" Cherokee.

Yeah, it weighs a lot more than a plastic garden trowel, but I have dug many a full-sized, two-person fox hole with one of those old shovels. Never needed the pick but the rest of the shovel has been very useful, even without wire cutters, saws, etc. Pretty cool idea though.

very interesting. I like it. But I do wonder if it is as strong as it seems in the video.
who will be the first one to get one and test the thing?

I'd consider testing one!

Who wants to stand outside my car and try to hit me with a long stick while I test the "shield" feature?

Oh... I might not want to try that deal where they dude climbed up what looked like a piece of ratty cotton clothesline to test the "anchor" feature. Someone else will have to be responsible for that test.

I'll never look at a shovel the same way again. ;)

Thanks for sharing that video, Pit. I've seen a similar demonstration of the Spetznatz... Spazznuts... whatever that Russian shovel is called, but it wasn't nearly as entertaining as the Chinese one.

Stay sharp,
desmobob

I'd rather amputate my foot with a Chinese shovel than watch a Costner movie.
Carl

I'd like to see that, can you post it on Youtube?:D:p

Im gonna use my shovel shield to block all the Costner mudslinging...and go watch "Bodygaurd".....

I like it, but I have the GI issue tri-fold trench shovel. It does all of what that one does for a third the price. You would simply need to grind your own edge on it.

I didn't read the comments until after I watched the video, but when I first started watching it, I was expecting it to transition into a gunslinging western movie. :D

If you want to do all that chopping, then a better tool (if you insist on using a shovel as a chopper) is the CS Special Forces shovel.

The Korean-era US, or some later European e-tools that fold and have a pick are probably the best of the type, and the new tri-folds can do pretty well, although you lose the function of the pick.

Of course, you can also pick up a GI pick that breaks into two pieces and comes with its own carrier to attach to a pistol belt.

There's no way that joint could hold up to that sort of lateral impact regularly.

Glad to hear someone say it.

I actually got mine out of the truck after I saw the video. I looked at mine and deduced the lateral stress by constant chopping would tear these joints up in the long term.

A good knife will help with the batoning effort here for taking down limbs and small trees.
