Here are a couple of shots the forging of a 5160 Bowie style that a customer ordered. If I can remember, I will add photos along with a brief description of what I am trying to accomplish.

If the forum members have no interest, let me know, and I will simply post a photo of the final project.

Thanks for looking............... Robert

The forge running at between 1750 and 1800 degrees (see pryometer)

Who is the "Geezer", and does he know what he is doing????????

"Anti-Banana-Attitude-Adjustment-Whompin'-Stick". I know that a good smith can keep the spine straight with good forging techniques...... I ain't a good smith, so I use my osage orange "whompin'-stick.

Working on the bevels with my "home-grown" Japanese stylish hammer made from a "drill" hammer.

Establishing somewhat of a ricasso area.

Using a rather crude "fuller" to draw out the tang. I have enough material that I could draw this tang out to about 2 feet:D

More pics a few posts down......

That there is one fine combo of bibs and shirt, Robert! Stylish. Dickies, if my eyes don't deceive me?

Nice shop.

Nice demo. Count one vote for "Please proceed!" Left handed, eh? Explains a lot....;)

Of course, Continue! Clean shop.

Nice outfit too Robert. I wear about the same thing every day. Carrharts, but I leave the top button on the side open.:D I guess you had to dress up for the camera. Thanks for the pictures, Lin:)

:D :D :D just kidding. I can't get enough of making knives, using knives and learning how other people make them. keep up the thread. can't wait to see the finished product:thumbup: :D

I sure would like to see more. And maybe a closeup of those tongs :D They look like they hold the flatbar real good.

Robert, you still have that hammer in the wrong hand but I'll let that go. You got my vote for Best Dressed.

How do you get that deer to stand there and watch you? Must make for easy hunting. Can't wait to see the rest of the pics Robert, missed you at Trackrock last time!

The deer statement had me bustin' my gut. Wow, that was funny! I had tears in my eyes....for real....keep up the humor Whit!

and please, keep posting pics...I'm just learning to forge knives and need all the help and learnin' I can get.

Hey Robert,
Since you are a lefty, you wanna spit a few pairs of Kevlar gloves? lol I like those tongs too......where did you get them?

Terry, I got those goose-neck tongs from Blacksmiths Depot. They come in several sizes, and do a pretty good job. Here is a LINK to a pretty good photo.

Whit, it is deer hunting season here in Alabama. That deer was hiding from the hunters. Seems he was told that my place was a good place to hide, since I am about half blind anyway.

Left-Handed??????? I always thought that "right is wrong", and "left is right":D

Thanks for the comments on my outfit. I may take up fashion modeling as a second career. An example of what the well-dressed blade-masher wears.

I will be adding a few photos over the next few days.

Robert

Cooool!! What kind of blower on the forge that is running and where did you get it?????:D

I.G., The forge blower is a little unit salvaged out of a dishwasher. These little motors help to dry the dishes. It has been running for almost two years without a failure.

The photos of the forging of a new blade always excites me more than any other part of knife making. Is it safe to have the gas tank so close to a 1800 degree forge? Just curious.
Regards
