Forging a Bowie

Well Bill, I guess when you looked at the crowd of double-ugly mugs at Bowie's, you might just be.

Longmire....Landrum......Frink......Bowie........Byrd.....Batson..... It never ends.

Some of those guys are so ugly, they had to have a special pass from the Animal Control Center just to be able to attend.:D

whoa there!

You are painting with a mighty broad brush, dipped in ugly and I must protest. You do not have all the facts. There was a secret ballot at Bowies that gave we, good lookers, a chance to vote for the ugliest maker that attended the hammerin.
The two of you were not given this opportunity because you were running neck and neck in the voting. We had to leave early, so, do not know what the outcome of the vote was but Rest assured you were in the running.

Great pics Robert. Thanks for sharing, Fred [one of the cute ones]:D

hmmmmm...now I'm wondering just why it is Bowie keeps asking me if I'm "coming down this year"? Bringing in a Yankee ringer for the ugly contest. I see now. At least I'm right handed. :D

Claiborne won the ugly maker contest, hands down!!!:) He was so proud to win something, he forgot to give me the well earned award for best looking!!

To tell you the truth, he got my vote. You would not think someone that ugly could be that fine a host. He got my vote for that also. He made us yankees feel welcome.
Fred

Fred, I started to list your name as one of the "double-uglies", but upon advice from Homeland Security, I felt it was better that I didn't. They told me that you are listed as one of America's most "muglie".:D

By the way, I added a couple of pics up a thread or three.

Geezzz......Robert, if you'd just kept your hat on for the pictures. This thread would only be one page and we could get on with life!

Blade is looking good.

Thanks for sharing Robert.I gotta get me a whompin stick too

The first thing I thought when I saw the pics was how does he work in the shop without spooking the deer:D

Milling in the slot for the guard.

Shaping the guard (Sort of "Dog-Bone-ish")
forgin21.jpg

Guard "roughly" shaped.... will refine by relieving sharp edges and smoothing everything out.
forgin22.jpg

Blade marking stencil in place.
forgin23.jpg

Marking the blade... First with D/C then with A/C.

Blade marked.

Three piece ferrule roughed in and pinned. The center piece will be slightly smaller and have a hammered texture.

Stay tuned to this local station for more......

Robert,

It looks as if you are making good progress.

Those little Shureline 5000 series mills are a slick unit.

Looking forward to the next step.

Good of you to put these pics up.

Fred

Looking good! That's a good use for the wood lathe too!:D Don't draw out more than you need for the tange, you can always use the rest of the steel in damascus!

Sealed with JB Weld. The spring helps keep everything snug while it sets.

Using the mini-mill to cut a channel for the tang (mortised handle construction)

3 piece ferrule pinned to the handle

Handle roughed to shape
forgin30.jpg

Handle and ferrule almost finished.
forgin31.jpg

The customer wanted a 5" beefy handle with a thong hole (not my preference, but the customer is always right) Finished except for final sharpening and clean-up. Fingerprints on the handle in the photo (oops !)

Great thread Robert, thanks for showing us your procedures. That's a great looking bowie knife.

Great job on a fine knife! This has been one of my favorite threads. I'm like a youngster, pictures to go with words keeps my attention.
