Forging a Bowie

Super photos Robert! Keep'em coming. Is that bag of Kingsford charcoal your back up when the propane runs out?

Went to the link for Blacksmith's Depot and realized there're only a mile from my house! Dang it, I've been wasting time on line when I could have just run over there. Thanks for that lead, buddy.

First ime to see you with the hat off, too. Noticed that, like me, most of the hair has migrated to the lower face area. See ya!

Robert, Tony Bell, and another knifemaker, were all at my shop one day and believe it or not we're all left handed. Another thing, we're handsomer then right handed knifemakers, no brag, just fact.

Terry, I got those goose-neck tongs from Blacksmiths Depot. They come in several sizes, and do a pretty good job. Here is a LINK to a pretty good photo.

Whit, it is deer hunting season here in Alabama. That deer was hiding from the hunters. Seems he was told that my place was a good place to hide, since I am about half blind anyway.

Left-Handed??????? I always thought that "right is wrong", and "left is right":D

Thanks for the comments on my outfit. I may take up fashion modeling as a second career. An example of what the well-dressed blade-masher wears.

I will be adding a few photos over the next few days.

Robert

Now all you need is the Bob Loveless "go to hell" train engineer hat:D

Well Tom, I don't know about you, but I am without a doubt the most handsomest-left-handed-knifemaker I know. The wifey will disagree, but she just ain't too smart when it comes to us "lefties.

Awesome thread!!! I love these in progress threads. Especially including forging.

And BTW- Yes, left handed makers are obviously the best looking. And I think they're smarter as well! ;) :D

But, Nick, didn't you show fotos about forging a 3V knife where you was pounding with either hand? I suppose that makes ya a "switchhitter", right? And you certainly are a cute one. ;) :D

Robert, that home made Japanese-y hammer is right nice.

You Missed Placed Yankee!!! It looks like Sister Agnes did slap you in the back of the head enough to make you use your right hand.  Also by the pic's I seen of you she sure smacked you in your face to much. HEHEHEHEHE!!!;) :D

Robert what type of anvil are you using ? It looks exactly like one of mine (the one I can't identify)

If you are so handsome, why did you cut off "yer hede" in the lastest installment of pics?

:p

:D

Keep 'em coming Roosko!

David, that is an old 124 lb. Hay Budden. Its been used and abused, but still is a fair anvil.

I would love to have one like Nick has in the pic he posted.

Robert

George, look at your avatar. Now that's UGLY!! Yes Nick, we are smarter too. I didn't put that in the post because I didn't know if some of the right handed people could handle us being handsomer and smarter at the same time.

"Roughly forged to shape..... Now the fun is over and the work begins.

Grinding the "flats" flat.
forgin11.jpg

When I flat-grind, sometimes I use the platten. Depends on the thickness of the blade, and how I feel at the time.
forgin12.jpg

Sometimes I use a "grindin' stick". Really helps with "burnt-finger-syndrome"
forgin13.jpg

Here is the "grindin' stick" in use.

Grinding a "false-edge"........ Very time consuming, and I usually clean it up as best I can with my Edge-Pro sharpener.
forgin15.jpg

So much for ginding....... Still have a lots of work to straighten the false edge, but we are almost ready to start on the guard shoulders.

Filing the shoulders...... Keep the file flat (not like I have it in the photo)

Guard shoulders filed in.

Robert, thats a good looking knife you have started. But, I am a little concerned about all this talk of good looks. I thought everyone was in agreement at Bowie's that I was the best looking knifemaker around!!

Well Bill, I guess when you looked at the crowd of double-ugly mugs at Bowie's, you might just be.

Longmire....Landrum......Frink......Bowie........Byrd.....Batson..... It never ends.

Some of those guys are so ugly, they had to have a special pass from the Animal Control Center just to be able to attend.:D
