I was wondering if there was a plug to remove the detent ball.
You stated before you have an open center - which is it? while the closed center would work, while the press is just sitting there in the neutral position the pump will be pumping pressure with the PRV relieving fluid flow to the tank - and making a terrible racket. With the lever in the center (neutral) position there should be an opening between the fluid inlet and the outlet back to tank.
