Forgive me.

I absolutely HATE to lose anything (it's not the loss so much as the fact I've been careless), only ever lost one knife and it still bothers me 45 years later!

I read something in a story once (was it in Tom Sawyer?) That to find a lost marble, you take another marble, tell it to find its brother, and toss it into the air. Watch where it falls, and the lost one will be nearby. :D

Back in highschool, in computer class I dropped a $2 coin under one of the desks and couldn't see it anywhere. I told my friend (who didn't believe me, of course) that I could drop another and find the first. Well, I dropped it and it rolled and stopped about 3 inches away from the first one.
I did the same trick a couple of weeks later, but ended up losing both coins.

I suppose, you win some, and you lose some.

If it squared with the other folks you could find an older gent or two with metal detectors, to go over the property. They can keep whatever they find minus the returned knives, and their being respectful of and low impact on the property. Should be a snap. There are metal detecting clubs out there with ethical guidelines that they follow. Get their names and tell them that it's a one shot deal. If they aren't willing to disclose names and be open\above board, they do not get access. Most hard core detectorists would jump at a chance to do an old site.

If it is indeed gone perhaps you should consider yourself fortunate. You may have just become that most wondrous instrument of fate that allows another the pure joy of finding a knife. I still remember the first knife I found; small, lightly corroded with a broken tip. I was a young child. It was at the time the best thing in the whole world.
So congratulations; thanks to you some day someone else might experience that feeling.

...not going to stop you looking for it though is it? Nah didn't think so ;)
I agree, it's like a new sort of GAW! But you might never know who the recipient is. Or maybe, think how good you will feel when someone comes up to you all excited to show you the cool knife they just found.
Just remember....before you can be found, you must first be lost.:D
