Found a site with good prices

I'm just going to say that I think this is a silly application of this rule. It's not my forum but I think that decision is pointless and foolish.

But to each their own I guess.

I apologize, and do not think this is an excuse, I'm simply explaining why I did what I did. I read the policy on deal spotting and investigated the site and honestly thought it did not apply. The site in question does not actually even sell any of the products, it simply links to sites that are selling them.

The policy on deal spotting as found in the FAQ gives as an example a person talking about a specific place to buy a specific product. I understand the reason to limit this. However this situation is different, the site in question is really just a collection of links to different items. By giving out the site in question we are neither talking about a specific item or a specific online vendor, simply a webpage that holds this type of information.

Would telling someone to use google products search be "deal spotting"?

What about telling somone to look for a product in question at their local REI/Dunhams/Whatever? (this is done quite frequently here)?

I thought the answer to these would be no, so that's why I thought it would be ok to post the site. The site actually links to alot of very well known online vendors that I'm sure everyone here uses alot.

I see that you as a moderator do not share my interpretation and I have edited all original posts by me. Won't happen again. I'm sorry.

Apparently I was not the only one with this idea about what constitutes deal spotting.

If these sites and this type of behavior does indeed violate the "deal spotting" policy, I think that the policy as listed in the FAQ needs to be revised to reflect this. Perhaps something along the lines of "Don't talk about anywhere you can buy anything, ever." seems like it could work.

In the "Going fishing/camping" thread I told Panch0 to check craigslist for a used tent for his camping trip. Was this deal spotting? I'm really unclear about what is and isn't permitted now.

I agree, this seems to skirt the definition of "deal-spotting" from what I can tell. I mean, how is this different than that member who posted his beta "ammo tracker" a while back here on (I think) W&SS, which basically deal-spotted various calibers at various sites? Wish I could find the thread now. Is this a double standard, or are there finer points that I'm missing? Not trying to stir up trouble, Ken, but I am curious to hear your comparison on the 2 situations.

I think it got moved to G & G

OK. Makes no sense but OK.

Makes perfect sense to me. Most forums are heavy-handed censorfests. Bladeforums is one of the few exceptions. Even banned people and spammers do not get their threads and accounts deleted.

All those "one item at a time" sites are owned by Backcountry.com, it is useless to dealspot them since a different item will be for sale by the time anyone else checks the site.

I can see why dealspotting is not allowed on BFC, since every other post would be talking about great deal this or that- and people would slip in to shill for their sites. . . A matter of zero tolerance or total shill-fest chaos.

Let me put it in very simple terms.....

Those dealers or sites do not pay to advertise here on BFC. Why give them free advertising?

If there was a situation where someone was deal spotting or thought to have been deal spotting it was not brought to our attention. Reporting a suspect thread is the best way to get a situation examined and/or rectified. We do not patrol the forum 24/7 and do not go out hunting for problems. We do not allow links to eBay so craigslist would fall under that as well I suppose.

If you know how to use Google then there is really no need to inform the members of "deals", now is there? I'm pretty sure 99% of the members on BFC know how to search the internet without anyones help.

I think the FAQ is pretty clear.....

No deal spotting

Yes, we know you found a great price on the Ninja Disembowel 4000 at SuperPriceMART. We don't care. We'd prefer you support the dealers who support BladeForums.com.

As such, we don't allow deal spotting because otherwise the forums would be a quagmire of "deals" (real or imagined) posted everywhere, or unscrupulous people posting "deals" for non paying dealers. So don't do it.

Auction / Deal / Bargain Spotting

This is a variation of the "no spam" rules that we have. We know you found a great deal on a Ninja Death Tool 3000 - we don't care.

If that dealer wants to advertise on BladeForums.com, encourage them to purchase a Dealer membership here instead of giving them free advertising.

This infraction can be issued as a warning and is worth 10 points towards your total. It expires in 12 months.
