Found in the bush

I found this POS in “the bush” last week while hiking to a glacier lake to take a bath. It worked perfect for hanging my towel on! I’m guessing the person that stabbed the knife into the tree had the same idea, just never took the knife back out.

Nice find!

It’s some sort of knockoff, marked “U.S.A. Superknife”, has aluminum handle scales and the stop pin/opposite end of the push button is chipped so the knife won’t lock open or closed unless it’s spun to the right spot. It’s clearly been used a ton also.

That aside, I was pretty happy as a knife collector to travel to the other side of the country and find a knife in the woods quite a ways off the pavement!

We were on a walk, & Nancy hawk eyed this switch blade (closed) in front of a deer camp. It was originally camo…bad camo.
The polite thing to do, would be put it on the porch. Well…
1. Did it come from THIS camp?
2. Switchblades are illegal in Pa., so randomly leaving one…I don’t know.
3. A hunter with this knife, doesn’t know knives, or hunting, and is up to no good, probably.
4. It was butt ugly, and had lived this way long enough. It needed Rustoleum!
5.It was more like a rescue.
6. I wanted it.
It now lives a life of love & leisure all blacked out.

When I was 7 or 8 there was a huge (like 10 acres) empty lot/area down the street from my house. Part was pond, part marsh, mostly just grass and was a retention/drainage area. In the summer its where football practice was. Spent much of my youth there. In the high grass I found an old lockback "Imperial Ireland" on the blade. Probably still have it somewhere.

NICE find !##!
BM-1000 Boguszewski Auto Spike is a fairly rare bird these days ;-)
Timeless old-school design that was cloned by many decades ago.
The one you found appears to have an extra handle screw and a safety switch (mine does not).
Congrat's on a killer find ;-)

What they look like with OEM Black Ano Aluminum handle with the Bali blade tattoo as a reference.

Found a Gerber Covert in it's sheath while hunting in a forest. Gifted it to an old friend.

Found a 12 inch Tramontina machete stuck to a tree. Fell in love and still use it.

Found a military folding shovel buried in sand at the beach. Cleaned it up, oiled it, and it still resides in my vehicle recovery kit.

Wow! Didn’t expect to see another one!
It’s actually a nice knife. Good feel, nice action.
Now, I’m wondering if I should remove the paint and let the camo be?

I don't mean to be a downer, but the Benchmade Auto Spike has been heavily copied/cloned (as Spey referenced).

Sorry, GmpaJim, but I believe your knife is a fake (not a Benchmade).

To my recollection the #1000 Boguszewski Auto Spike from B.M. came in four main options.
1) Plain (aka non-serrated)
2) Partially serrated
3) Black anodized aluminum handle
4) Blue anodized aluminum handle.
Possibly also remember some "First Production Run" versions in plain aluminum handles (clear silver).

Additionally, there was also a Mini version (multiple options of the mini, similar to the full-size) and also Gold Class featuring things like Damascus Blades & Titanium handles.
Additionally, there were non-auto B.M. Boguszewski Spike knives produced and sold (multiple options of the mini, similar to the full-size).

I would suggest you do a little research, as that extra handle screw I mentioned is indicative of either being a Gold Class knife or possible one of thousands of clones :-?
It would be stellar ..., would you be to find those handles are of Titanium because then you could electro-anodize them to about anything under the rainbow ;-)
I would be pleased to help you with the anodize work if you win this lottery.

Phil Boguszewski (R.I.P.) was from just down the road from me in Lakewood, WA and was the designer of another production favorite of mine the CS TiLite.

He was one of the grand-daddies of cool when it comes to knives.

K killgar

posted into this thread whilst I was writing my last reply.

I would agree with him re the likelihood of a clone. I had thought killgar mentioned Hex vs. Torx fasteners ..., maybe not upon review. However, there are archive reference photos illustrating some of the Spike(s) may have shipped with hex screws. The lack of blade tattoo seems to point towards a clone version :-(

Here is a link from
Illustrating BM-1000 Auto Spike both in clear aluminum (I mentioned above) and with hex fasteners vs Torx like my example.
BM-1000 Clear & Hex Fasteners ??

Re-Review of Post#6 (and the fact I can not definitively remember is there was a safety lock/switch version, what I think I see on top side of handle in picture), I think I am gonna agree with killgar. When I first looked at that grind it spoke clone ..., but could not put my finger on it. Looking closer at the photo appears to indicate there is no ricasso portion on the presentation side of the blade (NO Primary Grind - only a secondary bevel). Hmmm ... :-/

I would still do investigation on the handle composition on the off chance.
