Frank Centofante has passed away

Dang, first Bob Lum, now Mr. Centofante? That's disheartening news... My prayers are with his family.

I just spoke with Sue Centofante, my heart aches for her and her family. She told me the Memorial Service for Frank will be on September 29, 2009, at 10am:

St. Patrick's Catherdral
244 Smith Street
Providence, Rhode Island 02908

In lieu of flowers, a donation to any charity that helps animals would be greatly appreciated. This memorial service is open to the public and anyone who can attend is invited and welcomed. Sue and her family appreciate all of the warmth and loving words that all of you have sent her during this very sad time.

I had heard that Frank had died, but just found this site. He was a good friend of my uncle, Jim Fischer, when Frank was a fireman in Tampa, just starting to make knives in his garage. My uncle had Frank's serial number 2, and I have his serial number 17. Both are largish hunting knives in leather sheaths.
I saw someone had posted about Frank starting in the early 1970s, but both these knives were made in the late 1960s, around 1968. I took it back to him once, after he let me know that he could put his maker's mark on it and had him do so. He offered to change the handle but I kept the stacked leather. I used it out hunting once or twice, but mainly its been in a drawer for the last 40 years. Glad to say its in the same condition it was the day I got it. Seems likeI paid around $50 or so, which was a ton for a teacher making $3000 year.
Frank was a nice guy and a hell of a knife maker.

I guess it's never to late to say rest in peace. Spent many hours as a child reading his book" How to make knives".
