Frankenstein's Monsters

So, I had a busy forging day yesterday and decided to be extra ambitious. I thought a scimitar might be an appropriate project... :D:D:D

Made from another 5160 leaf spring, the overall length is 26" with a 19" blade. The spine thickness at the base of the blade is .22" and tapers down to .17" at the thickest point of the tip. I am very excited about this one!

Enough talk, here are the progress pics!!

What do you guys think?

Very cool blade Evan. I know some Seafair Pirates that would absolutely love that thing!

Seafair is a local festival lasting a couple weeks in summer, culminating in the unlimited hydroplane races and Blue Angels show in August.

:eek::eek::eek: I am scared !!! :eek::eek::eek:

Does it get a handle or does it just chop off people's heads like it is??!!:D:D

Just kiddin' Evan - I think! Anyway, I like it and I think it would be an impressive home defense knife!!:thumbup::D

I THINK you should be more careful with that 19" blade and flip flops. Wouldn't want you losing a toe / foot if that thing falls off the anvil.

I like the scimitar shape. Are you sharpening that reverse tanto area leading down from the spine?

Thanks for the comments guys!

Barry- Me inner pirate musta tak'n ov'r matey!! :emot-yarr:

Primble- I'm planing on using jatoba for the scales and bronze for the guard to match with my bowie.

Landon- I think I am going to sharpen the swedge on the clip, you know, for stabbing an such...:D I'll try to make sure I don't lop off a foot!

I haven't decided on the style for the guard yet (probably something piratey), but I have time to think about that as I still need to heat treat it and do the final grind and polish. I will do an edge quench to harden the edge but keep the spring in the spine, allowing the blade to flex some. I also haven't decided on how I will finish it, I may keep the forge scale going down the middle like it is now, or bring it all to a mirror finish.

I like a blade that wears the scars and texture of its birth in fire and under the hammer. To grind and polish all that away leaves just sterile steel behind, shiny and souless. Funny that just before seeing your photos I was looking at some Dan Brock's work on his site. I think even just the photographs of your scimitar are dangerous. I will make small offering to Hephaestus tonight, that he may smile on your work and help your hammer to dance.

Hey guys and gals, while I wait to have another forge day, I FINALLY completed the very first blade I forged, well one of the two I forged on my first day(the other blade is still in progress). This is the first knife I have worked on that has a hidden tang. Forged from a 5160 leaf spring, fully oil quenched, hair-popping convex grind, Kamagong ebony handle, and bronze hardware. With a 4.5" blade and 9" overall length, here is a bowie that is going to my friend Barry:

Did I forget to mention that this is the first knife bearing my maker's mark? Barry designed my logo, and I could not be more grateful! I thought it would be appropriate for him to have the very first knife with my mark on it. Thanks again bud!

Oh, and it doubles as a mirror!

It's insane how talented you are. It's pretty ridiculous that your first attempt comes out so beautiful. I'm assuming that there's a story behind this that involves a sale, your soul and the devil. ;)

Good job Evan - I know how hard you've been working on getting everything up and running in your shop.

Nice logo stamp too. ;)

You'll soon have a long waiting-list...

How about a Kuhkuri next?
