Freaky bug/parasite question--what the hell did I kill?

I've never seen that before thankfully, but the insects and rodents have a been a plague around here this year from the mild winter and then hot and dry first half of summer.

Honestly it's the worst I've ever seen around here when it comes to the insects and rodents, hopefully we have a very cold winter this year to kill off most of them.

The only thing to make it creepier would have been to swat the original fly with a Stephen King paperback...that's when I would have left the room...the house...and the state!

Ironically, I live in the same state as Stephen King and am only about 20 minutes on the highway away from where he lives. I've driven past his house on many occasions. It's got a pretty rad iron fence around it with huge bats on the gate. I also went to high school with his nephew. :D

You are not alone: link.

Yeah that was the only thing I could find that exactly matched what I saw, but the best answer is pretty vague. :o

Ugh. If it weren't a fly, I might feel bad about it, but dang, that's disgusting. No offense. Parasites just gross me out. Kind of coincidental that you live so close to King. If this shows up in his next book, you might want to get a cut of the action! :D

Now I know why all the survival experts say to cook your bugs before eating them - never eat them raw. I'm talking about grubs and grasshoppers, of course, not flies.....

It could have been some type of parasitic wasp. Some types will lay eggs on or in a host then the larval wasps ride the bus until it the host comes to an end and they exit and finish their development. Nasty in way if you get the image in your head.

Flies can get chiggers, but from your description it sounds as if it came out of them.

PS & off topic- My wife gave me a Golok and Bushlore from your business for my birthday a couple of weeks ago. FIRST rate! Getting good use form both of them. Inexpensive enough not to be afraid to use but high quality enough to be VERY good to use.

Glad that you like them!

I was going to bring up the Stephen King connection, but you beat me to it. He had to get his ideas somewhere, maybe rural Maine really is as freaky as what he writes...

Yeah--I was looking at the thing pretty close prior to smooshing it because I first noticed it while putting on my boots to go outside, so my face was close to the floor. At first I thought it was just one close to the end of its life cycle or something. There wasn't anything noticeable on it before I crushed it. O_o

Sorry to hear that 42,
I heard that they reproduce by masturbation!!

Take care, Im gonna put in another order soon....
John

I don't think so, but thanks for trying! The larval and pupal stages of phorid flies don't resemble the little dark red tick-like critters I saw. Also I don't see any mention of them targeting any insects besides bees and fire ants.

Macrocheles muscaedo-mesticae

Fuscuropoda végétons
