Fred Perrin abusing a Cold Steel triad lock knife

I caught enough on this one to know he is liking those Cold Steel knives a good bit and finds them impressive. He seemed to indicate he has been throwing them repeatedly for several months without worry or evidence they have shown any wear or blade play and no real changes other than scratches. Not sure. French is a bit rusty.

Sometimes you just need to focus on the knives and leave the excess background baggage and noise at home regarding the companies or makers. Everyone has dirty laundry and everyone is a salesman moving their wares. Sales makes the world go round as they say. Why is it that some can hype the crap out of their own products and use marketing techniques just like Cold Steel does and they never get labeled the same way or called sleezy along with the host of other things those that love hating Cold Steel come up with? Seems to me some other well known companies are just as full of marketing and salesmanship selling videos, key rings, ti rings, playing cards and who knows what else yet they slide right by an no one says a word about it. Maybe its just because Lynn has been doing it longer and taught a lot of those after him what works?

Anyway, the knives are either good or they ain't. After that its all nonsense to mess with really. Took me a while to gather that but its the case. Lynn has been doing locks right for most of the time he has been in business. Even the early Shinobu folders had better lock ups than most anything else they compared to at the time and that was in the 80s! Today that Triad is the one to beat for all I can tell. I've beat the crap out of my users that have it and all I've found is that when that blade locks up opened its about as close to a fixed blade as you are going to get in a folder. Say what you may about the man, the knives kick butt! Ain't no two ways about it!

Since the Spyderco Sage series offers the opportunity to try different locks, I do hope that they will eventually license the Triad lock for a special Sage!

i lke the Cold Steel products.
LT may have different marketing ideas compared to others, but I enjoy the over the top, fun and obvious enthusiasm he bring s to the knife world.

Personaly I think CS deserves some due credit for producing some very good designs at afordable prices.

The Triad Lock is a great lock and should get them a good bit off folder business from folks who actualy use their knives. Especialy folks in the construction trades where you would much rather have a knife you can depend on, but which you know you are going to trash due to opening bags of concrete, cutting pallet straps etc.

While some of their advertising may be a bit cheesy. I find it entertaining to watch their test vids.

I care , I think it's pretty cool.

You should! You should have some feeling of pride for a job well done. I can't wait til you finish my custom Navajah (Espada inspired).

Can anyone provide pictures of a dis assembled lock to see how it works?

This makes me want to dig into one of these.

Here's a Med Espada I cracked open to mill a lanyard post from the spacer.

Glad to be of service!

Hey Charlie I am very interested in the custom Navaja you are having made please keep us up to date

I highly doubt that's ever gonna happen, but it would be very cool:thumbup:

Of "adapting" John Permar's design. At least John got paid before they "adapted" his design.

CS makes some interesting looking knives, but the sleeze factor kills my interest.

There is always at least one on the bunch.....

no, it was all my design, when my patent was pending John Permar approched Cold Steel with his newly granted patent, LT made an agreement with John. I don't know what that was. I think John was trying to sell his patent to any cutlery company, and rightly so. Lt did not want any competetion with others and knew that securing John's patent and then getting ours allowed would be the safest thing to do. We did our patent search for the tri-ad over a year earlier. However Permar's did not come up because it was "pending" and pending patents are not accessible.

Very cool Andrew.

I'm not a fan of Cold Steels advertising or PR style, but I try not to let that get in the way of enjoying a good knife. There are very few of their products I like, but I'm truly happy with the ones I own.

A friend of mine donated a Rajah to our little knife collector group to test at our monthly meetings. We've been pounding on that poor knife for more than a year, it's still working flawlessly.

I'm looking forwards to the new Voyagers with tri-ad lock, the Lawman is a bit thick and heavy for me (and I don't like coated blades).

I just noticed this posted on CS web site :(

The new Voyagers and Gunsites have been CANCELLED because they did not meet our specifications or delivery schedule requirements. All backorders will be CANCELLED and the Voyagers will be reintroduced in Spring 2011. We will have more information on the 2011 Voyagers at a later date.

I've been edc'ing my Lawman for several weeks now. It locks up like a bank vault. I'm not into throwing it or anything like that, but it's nice to know that it's strong enough to take it. I'll be looking for other models with the Triad lock, simply because of the strength of the lock. It is quite impressive.

I see no problem with CS marketing. Lt is just trying to show what his knives are able to do. The only issue I do have is how they price their products. IMO if they want to sell something for $400 that's what they should do instead of having their dealers sell it for 75% less.

The Triad lock is a great invention, and I may someday buy an American Lawman because of it. The knife design is solid, and AUS-8 is decent steel, but the lock is the main selling point for me. Andrew has good reason to be proud of his work.

I also do not like coated blades. Cold Steel should consider DLC as an upgrade from Teflon for some of their user blades. Those AL's Fred was throwing look terrible with the coating all worn away at the tip.
