check out my "made in france" outdoor kit:

IMG_3888+_Large_.JPG

contents:
- opinel saw 12cm
- opinel 10 carbon blade (general cutting)
- opinel 8 slimline inox (food prep)
- orange bic lighter (hard to misplace)
- petzl headlamp
- moleskine (not really made in france but has it's origin in Paris)
- Conté pencil

pro:
- cheap
- cool
- nkp friendly
- reasonable weight

cons:
- blades hard to open when wet/damp
- not for "heavy use"

I'll post pics of my "made in usa, japan, and sweden" kits later :)

Is there, like, a white flag folded up in the moleskin book, or is it separate? :D

Just kidding, neat kit. Sure it weighs just about nothing too, which is always nice. I'm excited to see the other kits! It's a fun exercise, looks like!

VERY FUNNY;):D

well the kit doesn't need a white flag since it's so lightweight you can run away fast without having to surrender..

I love my Opinel #8 for urban EDC. I find myself carrying this thing more and more in place of my SAK solidier (which also makes a great EDC). The opinel just slices so beautifully compared to the thicker and shorter SAK blade. I also love the blackened patina of the carbon blade - helped along with its grapefruit slicing chore implented each day at lunch.

The con for me on the opinels are as stated in the OP on blade stickyness in damp and humid conditions. This really limits the applicability of this knife for extended outdoor use, at least for me. I don't think you'd have the same issues with the saw as you do with the knives that seem a bit too tight at the handle/blade junction. I know others have improved their opinels by removing the ring and blade and sanding the wedge then sealing it wither water seal. I'm considering doing this but not too anxious of removing the ring on my perfectly functional, and most commonly pocketed EDC.

Very nice kit QRT.
My wife and I were in Belgium once and we had bar none the most expensive meal of our lives :-) When our waiter asked if we wanted wine with our dinner and we said yes, he brought the whole bottle and it was an expensive bottle! Oh well...it was still an excellent meal.

Mark, You should have ordered a beer. A trappist one. Nothing is better.

You're in Canada! Just leave it outside overnight and the moisture will freeze out. :p

Or ... you could stand it on its tail and drip mineral oil into the pivot area, which will simultaneously protect against rust AND keep water out of the wood.

Thanks for the tip, I've tried using olive oil to waterproof them but with no luck. I'll try mineral oil next..

also, check out this cool thank you note I got with my opinels:

yeah they tend to overcharge for wine, you should have gone for a beer as dantzk suggested. When in France, drink wine. When in Belgium, drink beer.

Ghent, Gand, is cool, yes. Belgium is a cool country. I spend all my free time near the frontier in the south of Charleroi. Nice place.

Man did that make me laugh!

I love opinels, one of my first childhood knives was an opinel...great little slicers!

My dad bought one at the same time as me...maybe twenty years ago. The blade is probably an inch shorter by now from all the sharpenings it's gotten over the years.

Very nice thread, love the Opinel saw, I' ll have to go pick up one of those, too:cool:

and those pictures are also coming:eek:, great!

weird, all mine have "made in France" engraved on them..
HA HA HA! Like they work in France.

Don't forget to embroider on the white flag, in German of course, "Here, you may take my wife... just don't hurt my boyfriend."

Sheesh.....you guys are horrible. I have been to France several times in the last couple of years and I no longer hate it. I was treated very well and had a great time, even in Paris. I guess all of those British tourist have softened up the French as far as English speakers go.:D As for Belgium, all i can say is that even there mass production beers like Jupiter are great!. I spent some time in Brussels and did a side trip down to Iper (Ypres) this past September. Nice little kit. Does the folding saw work OK?
