French outdoor kit

anyone got any suggestions for other french things to add to the kit?

thiers-issard 7/8 with horn handles and a plisson HMW 16. might as well look good while you're out there, you know?

That Opinel saw isn't bad. They actually have a larger folding saw as well.

They have 2 hawksbill knives, one with a gentle downward curved design.

The other is a pruning knife, practically a pocket-sized billhook. This is the real harvester blade, and I recommend it highly. If you want to trim a branch, you place the hook over it and pull, and you'll scarcely feel the branch cut through. It's handy working through underbrush - you don't have to slash branches or thorns or vines out of the way.

Don't forget their paring knives and the garden knife, too.

Only a pencil to write on your Moleskine? Why not add a 4-color Bic pen? inexpensive, tried and proven for years and years at school by most of our students.

I love those 4 color pens. I used to keep a supply of them in my briefcase.

Black for class notes, red for my margin comments, green for assignments. Blue for personal scribbling to keep from using up the black too fast. I always had refills for the black and red. Always, toothmarks in the little ball on the end, especially when I was thinking what to write next. :)

Years later I realized I could do cartoons with all those colors!

true, I have some of them but I just don't like their looks. They remind me too much of "lets go to school" rather than "lets go hiking"

A big plus one on the Laguiole...gotta have a corkscrew to be French!

They're making Opinels with corkscrews again now.

hmm...my bic lighter's made in the USA. my mini bics are french.

Mine are made in the US too.

I've been waiting for Opinel to come out with a round handled fixed blade forever. They finally have. Unfortunately, they are only available in sets of six, starting at $200 .

Don' t mean to hijack this thread, but I just would like to know where i can find closer information on the opinel fixed blades with the round handle?

Thanks kiahs, they really do look very nice, but unfortunatley too expensive, and too many, I would prefer buying one at a time.

Cool kit, I never really tried an Opinel, because if I did I think my Laguignole would just be jealous, but does the OP blades seem flimsy, or well built?
Thanks, sorry for the thread hijack.

Depends on the size you get, a number 10 is far from flimsy but still no prybar. When used properly they won't fail.

The set with beech wood handles costs only 100€.
