Just saw this, some rather lively little Belgian Shepards at work. With French Police RAID unit, {They hire experts of all backgrounds not just Police. So can include underworld, military & anyone else they think can provide the expertise.}}

Seem within forum rules? I think? Please delete thread if I am wrong. {& points of course.;) }

Never known a Malinois but these ones featured look good pound for pound. :)

Those dogs look to enjoy it. You can hear the cop say it: "Il en veut encore" (he wants more)

That's impressive. It provided a good laugh, too. That first guy seemed genuinely terrified; maybe he didn't expect to be pulled out the window! It really seems like these dogs could save a lot of police lives. I don't usually give the French credit for much, but somebody over there was thinking on this one!

Since the Munich massacre, western Europe's anti-terrorist groups are highly trained, they know it happened and that it can happen again.

Yes they certanly seem to enjoy it!

The French have had terroism since the 1960s, I was thiere on Holiday as a child in 1975 & thier were 20 bombings in Paris that week & several Jewish schools machine gunned by islamicists. But Paris is like London it carries on & doesnt blink an eye. They have seen it all so many times.

So they have many different styles of specialist units.

I thought it intresting thier choice of dogs.

This dog is one of the 4 Belgium races and is called a Mechelse Herder.In Belgium we speek dutch ,only a minority is french speaking.I had one of those, very unpleasant race:agressive.I had to give it away to a security firm.European anti terrorist groups are the best among the world.Noy much bla bla bla but action.

and an expensive one too!

Did you see it grab its handler? job-hazard....yikes!

Malinois = German Shepard type dog used in police and military work...We use them in our canine unit They are about 8 to 10 thousand each and that includes airfare for a handler to work with dog for a while before buying. This also includes a 100% warranty if dog does not work out you can pick another. We have 11 dogs in our unit...8 Malinois, 1 rotty and 2 bloodhounds. We lost 3 dogs last year...1 shot in the line of duty, 1 leaped off a roof to catch a perp and 1 died of heart attack. The dog who was shot to death, "Ranger", had 3,000 civilians at his funeral. The perp who shot Ranger was shot to death by SWAT.

European police dogs are serious, period.
As a kid in Germany in the 60's, I was chased by Polizei dogs, a Rotweiler and an Alsatian. NOT FUN! The USAF Security Police dogs on the bases where I grew up were and still are extremely well trained, and not to be messed with either.

Sure Dan, just an excitable nip though!

Intresting T bag, The German Shepards Ive met, well 90% of them including police ones were to inteligent or perhaps human like in a way, if they thought they would lose they wouldnt go in, it looks like the Belgium shepards have more of a terrier approach perhaps? {the other 10% were like cold stone killers or raving mad biters.}

What circumstances make you use a rotty instead of a Malinios? I love the way Dobermans & Rotties like to ambush, Dobermans in particular they also go in even if they will losse of course. Airdales do the same as well.

I wouldnt want to fight a rotti though.

The Rotty was a guard dog from a private agency that went out of business and given to us. We are trying to start our own breeding program to save on costs. All of our costs are paid for by the officers who are handlers or private donations. The Rotty isn't any more vicious than the other dogs but is a good scare tactic for perps. When we announce "You have 10 seconds to come out or were sending in our 135 lb Rottwieler, while the handler is working him into a frenzy. When he growls and spits it sounds like a monster from a horror movie coming for you. They usually come out with their hands up...At least the smart ones as he is trained to go for the testicles.....OUCH.

Cheers,

yes the rottis Ive known wernt particulariy vicious, just strong & built like small bears. Those ones didnt bark or growl though.

Trained for testis! that should end an incident quickly!

They do seem a natural target for some untrained but dangerous dogs, terriers especialy, throats as well of course.

Wouldnt like to play target when that Rotti was bieng trained!

Spiral, Malinois are all business. My friend breeds and trains APBT as personal protection dogs, but many of the folks that he trains with have these Belgians. They are high strung like a terrier, and can be handler aggressive or "sharp" like many terriers. Percentage wise they produce more working dogs than German Shepherds because there is less show interest.in them. Working breeders do a better job of culling litters to remove those that don't genetically "have it". In this regard they are like greyhounds, working terriers, and border collies and kelpies ~ they have serious drive and instinctively know what to do. I have helped my friend work them before and they pack a lot of punch for a 70lb dog, and are very athletic. I sure as hell would not want one coming after me!

Jeez! Those dogs really do the trick. I don't know if I would want to be the volunteer for the training purposes, though!

stevo...would love to hear more about the PPD training for APBTs (I have an AmStaff/APBT).

What traits make a good PPD APBT?

Are there basic training tasks I can do?
(Mine has all basic obedience training already and attends classes regularly)

What kinds of things can I train her in, and still keep her a pet?

Cheers Steve, I guess as they have it geneticaly that the key. Cool.

Dan with English Staffs & American pitbulls Ive known I think they defend thier owners always, but other than that they often seem to realy like people & want to be friendly? {Unless very badly treated as puppies.}

Never met an American Staff though. Also whats an APBT?

APBT - American Pit Bull Terrier.

Most proper APBT's make pretty poor PP dogs, although there are exceptions. Human aggresion, of any kind, is usually not tolerated in fighting dogs, and so throughout it's history, most APBT's whom showed inclination to bite humans were planted.

Daniel, your best bet would be to get the dog eval'ed by a trainer and go from there. PP work is not something to be approached lightly.

Here's a couple of clips of one of my standard AB's (American Bulldog) "Zero" doing a bit of PP work. Decoy is Jon Naroditsky of Falawood K9.

Sorry, but the first thought that crossed my mind was a brace of Yellow Labrador Retrievers! :D
