Friendly folder for VERY liberal academic office?

I know we all have our "horror" stories of knife sheeple but, in my experience, no matter what the political leanings of we or our colleagues, it's the person using the knife and how they are perceived that makes all the difference. When I was student teaching at the local high school I often had an Opinel #10, not small by most standards. No one cared, because they knew there was no reason to be alarmed about me. Just my personal experience.

I agree. For the most part YOU are the one who dictates how others treat you. Act accordingly.

Plus, since when did liberal=non-knife person? My wife is as liberal as they come and she thinks my knives...in her words..."are kick arse!":D

Awesome! My gf is super liberal but sadly my knives make her nervous... she's quite a delicate flower. ;)

I suggest making sure that whatever you carry is within the agreed-upon (campus?) rules.

That said, I am a faculty member and pretty darn liberal myself (although you shouldn't assume that all faculty or researchers, even at a liberal institution are), and I carry a knife every day. And I make a point of using it at lunch. I think a Sebenza would be absolutely fine--they are really nice and everyone can see that. I carry everything from a TSF Beast to custom slip-joints. And yes, I have them clipped to my pocket or in it while teaching.

The more people that see knives being used and respected as tools, the better.

The smal sebenza should be fine, and the insigno is a good suggestion too. Also a great knife. It's what I carry, and I'm faculty.

The absolute safest is a slipjoint. I think the larger world divides knives into two categories: the two handed kind used by grandad, and the modern ones, always used by punks and dangerous people.

The best slipjoint are old fashioned (Case, Schrade) or even better, SAK. You can get a good size SAK and have no problems.

Im very liberal.
I carry knives. So far I've yet to have any real issues with knife carrying apart from obvious places like Schools/Goverment buildings where I simply don't take knives in.

Sebenza may be classy by our standards on this forum but by the general population standards it's still just a knife and can be opened fast and may appear intimidating by others. Even now I don't consider it classy, it's just another one handed folding knife and it's only classy in a sense that it's not a stupidly overbuilt tactical folding knife.

If you want to walk away from that view go with a slip joint, old school slip joints bring back the whole "It's just like what my grandpa carried" kind of view or a swiss army knife as people think closer to MacGyver and that you fix stuff with it too. Your still going to encounter people who are afraid of it, but far less and a lot less people commenting on why you carry a weapon and all those fun remarks. A leatherman also would also fall into this category in my experience too as your viewed as someone who will more than likely be fixing things things with the tools than a guy with a knife.

Did you ever try and do what I do with that....

Walk her into the kitchen and pull out a bunch of kitchen knives out of the drawer and lay them on the counter.....

Then put that small little folder next to them.......

That has worked every time for me....

I'd stop with the political innuendo, it will only get the thread locked. That said, this thread may be of interest, someone had the same situation recently and it has a lot of good suggestions:

As far as dealers carrying a specific knife, there is a list of dealers available that support Bladeforums:

You can also start a thread in the Want To Buy section if you want to save a few bucks, or simply look in the Exchange for what is currently available.

if a CRK, then gooeytek is right on the money.
the people who take a step back in the presence of a knife, seem to take a step forward to see a damascus Mnandi.

myself, being a Frikky Fanatic, i'd say check out the endless possibilities of these types of knives.

I work in a highly liberal, always politically correct educational academic research firm and was wondering if you guys think the small Sebenza would be acceptable? I am seriously thinking about ordering a small, left handed carbon fiber
Sebenza. Needless to say, I must keep my more conservative political views to myself here! I currently carry a Spyderco Dragonfly which I have had no issues with, but I am looking for a more higher end
offfice friendly knife now.

I also understand from Chris Reeves that the small left handed CF Sebenza is on a 3 month backorder for more stock. Unless anyone here knows of a CR dealer that may have one available?? I definitely want a left handed version since I am left handed only.

Thanks

I would carry an SAK....

You can get one of the smaller models and use it as a key chain, like the Classic SD model.....

I think a polished scale small sebenza look a tad more gentlemanly than the black carbon fiber (like the gold leaf, rain drop, elk mtn, uniques, etc)

Unfortunately for you the company that carries them exclusively (or so I thought) isn't on the paid membership list Rev posted above. However a google search may yield the results you seek...

The small Sebenza is very classy and at 2.94 inches it's legal to carry almost anywhere. I'd say go for it but the correct answer lies with your superior as stated above. Get one either way, you don't work 24/7! At least I hope not!

Excellent idea, she cooks a lot and is very good at it. Interestingly, she can use my Moras or other non-kitchen cutlery knives with ease (usually I let her use an old Benchmade Rant fixed Bowie in fact) I guess because in the kitchen "knives have their place." (Speaking of which I do need to invest in more kitchen cutlery, it's just so much fun using my other knives that work well enough for that).

She does a lot of physical stuff on her own, in a way she's very tough, but in so many others, very delicate, bless her heart. ;)

And you won't even have to say a word about it. :)

My Victorinox Bantams make friends where ever I use them. The Case Peanut definitely sparks memories of people who had a Dad or Grandfather that had one but the Bantam seems to have universal appeal...everyone always has positive reaction to that familiar red cellidor scales with white shield and cross.

id go opinel or SAK. If they look at you funny just tell em ones french the other is swiss.
