That's true, but for most people, their Doctor is simply not going to do that anymore than s/he is going to give you a bottle of painkillers or anti-biotics, "just in case."

Depends on the DR, if you explain you take long backcountry trips any resonable Dr would scrip you at least a couple amps worth if you can prove you know what you are doing. Its done all the time with all kinds of drugs for outdoor pursuits. When they expire you bring them unused to the Dr and give them back for disposal. A relationship develops and they will scrip you whatever you need.
