FRN= A POS handle

Boats, I'm sorry to hear about your bad experience. I'd love to see some pictures though. Also, I urge you to send it back to spyderco, they will make things right. That kind of stuff shouldn't happen.

Here's a link to some "testing" that I did awhile back:

http://www.bladeforums.com/forums/showthread.php?t=352994

I mucked up the knives with sand and syrup, I ran over the knives in my truck, and I dropped them off the roof of my 2-story house onto the concrete patio.

Overall, the FRN Spyderco Rescue fared better than the Spyderco SS Endura or the Benchmade G-10 722.

Allen.

Allen, now I say this with love, but you are sick man. You ran over a micarta calypso jr with a car and dropped it two storeys on to concrete?

heh heh heh now yu've given me some ideas for my D'Allara rescue, which so far has taken all the abuse I can dish out and laughed at me. Sometimes I wake up needing to destroy something beautifull............

I would think that if you sent it in to Spyderco they might be able to help you. My advice is to contact them and see what they could do.

I think the odds on damaging my Spyderco getting into or out of a car were infinitely higher than dropping a knife with G-10 scales from a helicopter or even from the second floor onto the patio.

I'll bank on the dependability of a knife with the everyday ability to take what comes over one with the seeming ability to take oddly spectacular abuse, but which has a hard time dealing with the mundane.

Boats, I hear what you're saying.

I was merely pointing out that FRN, SS, G-10 all have their different strengths and weaknesses.
Handle material is always a compromise in strength, weight, comfort, affordability, and personal favor.
One of my very favorite knives is my Buck 560 with a titanium handle.
But a light-weight FRN folder has its place too.

I really like the Pacific Salt alot, but if Spyderco gave it a titanium handle, I would buy it in a NY minute!

Cheers,
Allen.

Hi Boats,

Sorry to hear of your unhappy experience with the FRN handle. It is possible for the clip to shear the FRN, but it is difficult and rare. Perhaps if you would send the knife back to us, we might be able to help.

Also, we do make knives out of about every material available, because different people prefer different materials.

I had the same thing happen on a Native, I sent it in and Spyderco took care of it for me.

Hello Mr. Glesser:

Thank you for your personal attention to this thread. I am almost sorry my definitive experience with FRN came at the expense of one of your company's products. Rest assured I have had no home for Benchmade Griptilians either.:D The H1 drew me to the PS despite my aversion to FRN handles, so you did well in that regard.

Are you sure you still want to see the knife with Gorilla Glue all over the clip mounting?:D Short of throwing my less than pristine blade into a new yellow handle, I fail to see what more meaningful repair could be undertaken than that which has already been done. If my clip wanders off again, it will be due to metal fatigue.

Just so that you know, I am not writing off Spyderco offerings because of what happened to my Pacific Salt. The clip is actually quite secure now and I may rotate it in again to see how it does with this waterproof adhesive all over it.;)

If your company ever makes a Manix with an H-1 blade, lock-up, liners, and with a titanium or stainless clip screwed into those liners with itty-bitty H1 screws, as I seem to prefer, give me a shout and I'll purchase two.

I think this issue is more to blame on the barrel clips on the older FRN models than the FRN itself. Luckily the new Delica and Endura models have much better clip attachment, and I can't imagine the Salt series won't see some improvement eventually as well.

True that.

I have an older model that I just screwed a 3 hole clip into, much better.

Before this ole horse dies I'd also like to veture the theory that this can pretty much only happen if you carry the knife clipped to the back pocket of your pants - at least that's the only way it's ever happened to me and I snagged quite a few clips getting in and out of my car before I got wise.

I've had the clip thing happen while cliped to my right front pocket. I never clip a knife to my back pocket.

I don't feel like having torn up car seats all the time. Sure-Fire is right.

Mine was in the front right pocket. I think the knife handle, through my pocket, may have hit the seat belt buckle assembly that sticks up on that side of the driver's seat of my car and my body weight did the rest.

Boats, Send it in to Spyderco.

1) Your knife gets repaired or replaced

2) Spyderco gets to investigate what happened and see what they can do to prevent it from happening again.

Win, Win, situation for all.

Boats if you are a fan of H-1 steel, just to let you know, Spyderco has plans for a H-1 Fixed Blade. Also if you are a Spyderco fan, check out their forums, lots of good info.
