From Old to New.

Jared, outstanding pics and great right up. I'm just missing the Old Mean Street!!!
Congrats Bro...

Cograts Jared i figured you'd be digging around for a old school Shbm. Looks like you scored a good one too. But if you can't seem to fit your big paws around the handle of that Shbm i'd be willing to help you out with that problem. :D You've got a couple of nice sets there brother take care of them now. ;)

great pics and review brother:)

Congratulations on the SHa BooM!

Thanks eveybody for your kind words. This was just my way of showing appreciation for some incredible knife designs. Even though I would grab some of these knives over others I would not complain about having and using any one of these. Both the old and new designs are incredible and if you have any one of these you have some of the best knives ever created.

Great write up Jared .... Certainly interesting to know the differences on the BWM LE and the SHBM ....

Also interesting to hear that you use the B11 rather than the BWM LE .... from using both a lot I think the B11 makes more sense as a user .... it is lighter and chops slightly better ....

In time I think the B11 will become accepted as the best knife Jerry ever made as a "user" .... I cannot see it being beaten for performance v weight .... old Jaxx is probably sitting on a "gold mine" of an investment with all the ones he has ....

These are the main reasons why the B11 is my user of choice. The only disadvantage it has to the BWMLE is the fact that it has a hidden tang so using the butt as a hammer is not as readily possible. That's not to say that in an emergency I wouldn't hammer on something with the B11 but I might feel bad doing it. :D

great pics and review brother:)

Congratulations on the SHa BooM!

Thanks man!!:thumbup: And thanks to you I will always call this

SHa BooM!!!!

Great review and congrats on the new score. I am glad I got a BWMLE before they went off the site. It's probably the closest thing I will have to an SHBM for a little while. It does seem to be a jack of all trades. Not the best chopper, but really quick in the hand compared to the heavier mistresses, and really classy with the black paper:thumbup:

great score, oeser. I really like the feel of that handle. Never used it hard though. I actually had two in my hands at one time, but moved them both later on. I think the numbers were under 100 total with diagonal groove micarta handles and 6 or maybe 12(can't remember anymore) of those were bead blasted. These were the very end of the SHBM run and you can tell because they were machine ground to a near perfect 0.252-.254 inches. Coated they would be a bit thicker, like 0.26 or so. Where the older knives had non standard thicknesses that were all over the place.

Jared, I had no idea how well it compliments the LMS. An excellent pairing. And yes, mid '99 is exactly right. I've seen a few diagonal cut SHBM-LE's, but that's the only diagonal cut SHBM-CG I ever came across.

They are all in hiding. There was at least as many and usually more of the coated blades made.

Thanks you two wise old HOGS for more info. The funny thing is that this one was over looked in a couple of for sale thread on the exchange but it seems to be a pretty special one. It's hard to tell but this one has the old school crinkle coat too with a bead blasted (not double cut) spine. I bought it from the original owner and have been assured it was never sent in. He, in fact, didn't even know it would have the diagonal groove micarta. There is something really special about these older blades though that I have really come to appreciate.:cool:

The really old coating is smooth. Crinkle came afterwards, So this knife is definitely closer to the start of the E-handle knives which mostly had crinkle coat. Although some of those had smooth coat as well. That was all a transition period. That was also the time when Busse hurt his hand really bad and could not grind. Probably to much scotch one night before grinding.:D

That original coating was incredible.....some of the toughest I have ever seen.

Fixed that statement for you Cobalt

.

My SHBM LE has slotted fasteners, vertical grooves in the handle and a big tip swedge like the 1/300s, but longer.

:D
