Are those scales original?

of course they are. Those are the scales used on the oldest of the LE's. Which, by the way the SHBM LE numbering system has nothing to do with when they were made. For example this one and Skunks #500 are definitely older than my old 236(which use to be chucks) which Tony has. If you look at tim's, Jerry took a 1 of 300 grind and turned it into an LE. My #37 is a a 1 of 300 grind but with the older smooth scales and even more rare smooth bolts. Mine has the number actually stamped into the metal, not etched.

If skunks has the long thick swedge and is even thicker than the 1 of 300's and has the thicker profile, it is even older, even though it was the last one supposedly made, lol

oeser, if I befall hard times, I will keep you in mind:D However, this one and two others are my gems and will not go anywhere. Oh, and there are some SHBM LE's that have no numbers:D

Hmmmmmm, Skunk has one, Tony has one, Cobalt has one and I have one. Where the heck are the other 496???

:D:D:D Well, I have more than one, but I think we can all agree that there was never 500 made. I am sure porkey himself won't admit it, but I seriously doubt that more than 50 or so were made (maybe he meant 50 instead of 500). At $1200 or 1250 a pop in 1999, there probably wasn't that many buyers. But we will never really know. I have been able to account for less than 13 myself. there are a few porkers in here that have them and are not talking. I know they have them Some old porkers who no longer post have them as well. But I have never been able to acknowledge more than 12 or so. But at least us old porkers still have them. Tim, I am glad you got that one that was supposed to be mine. I am glad it went to you. Tony has a beautiful one and he deserves it. Skunk's is the fanciest of the lot. Mine is probably the oldest one actually made since it was not standardized in it's format. So where is #1? :D

just as a side note, there were two types of satins made. One was the LE and the other was a CG in satin form. I had two of those. The difference was that the Satin CG's still had the dimpling on the flats between the blade and the handles, the LE's were finished perfectly. The other difference is that the LE's weere all hand ground not machine ground like the CG's. This was noted in that the LE's were all thicker. The Satin CG's typically mic'd out to 0.26 inch or less and had dimples. LE's varied in thickness with some being 0.27-0.29 inches thick. This thickness was achieved only by hand grinding to lessen how much material was removed.

Thanks, I will hold you to it. Something tells me though that hard times aren't coming your way, nor would I ever wish them on you.

I think I am deserving as well.

Here is Tony's LE, previously mine and originally chucks. This one proves what I was saying earlier. The diagonal groove micarta scales were at the end of the SHBM run, so this one may actually be the last LE made or near the end even though it is number 236...:D

So in reality mine is #1, Skunks is #2, Tim's is #3, Tony's is #4 :D

it's all in fun:

here is an interesting one I own. Is it an LE? it is certainly finished as an LE, definitely hand ground as it is 0.28 inches thick. It was done during the original production run. But it has no number.

Take a close look at the logo

shbmle022.jpg

It's still a nice old SHBM but the logo is in the middle of the blade. Maybe Jerry was drinking a few during the time he made it.

Brother, I would certainly try and find you a gold bar for that one.......:thumbup:

I know you would:D I just about had to give one up to get it. Most money I ever spend on a knife and well worth it.

here is another interesting one. This is an LE. It was purchased by a friend of mine from Jerry. Jerry having had to much to drink did not finish it in time for when my friend was coming from 10k miles away to get it and a few other knives. Jerry said he could finish it in a few days, but A said he did not have the time and took it as is, sans all Identification. Hence, the first no number LE was born. I have an FBM LE exactly the same way, no number or ID on it. This one is massive at nearly 0.29 inch thick. This one is the same blade style as skunks #500 and same handles as his and my #37
